Approach

Interactive discussions, practical activities, and reflective exercises.

Step 1

Welcome & Introduction (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  1. Welcome: Greet parents and thank them for attending. Introduce yourself and the topic of healthy relationships.
    • Teacher Script Idea: "Welcome, everyone! I'm so glad you're here today to explore a topic that's incredibly important for our families: building and modeling healthy relationships. Our goal is to equip you with practical tools and insights to strengthen your family connections."
  2. Icebreaker: Ask parents to share one word that comes to mind when they hear 'healthy relationship.'
  3. Overview: Briefly outline the workshop's agenda. Introduce the Slide Deck: Healthy Relationship Habits to guide the session.

Step 2

What are Healthy Relationships? (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  1. Slide Presentation: Use the Slide Deck: Healthy Relationship Habits (Slides 2-4) to introduce core components of healthy relationships: communication, respect, trust, empathy, and boundaries.
  2. Discussion: Facilitate a brief discussion using prompts like:
    • "Which of these components do you find most challenging to maintain in a busy family life?"
    • "How do you think these components are modeled (or not modeled) for children in daily interactions?"
  3. Introduce Checklist: Distribute the Handout: Healthy Relationship Checklist and ask parents to silently reflect on which markers they regularly demonstrate and which they'd like to improve. Explain that this is a personal reflection tool.

Step 3

Modeling Healthy Habits: Activity & Discussion (15 minutes)

15 minutes

  1. Modeling Concept: Explain the importance of modeling behavior for children. Emphasize that children learn by observing adult interactions.
    • Teacher Script Idea: "Our children are always watching and learning from us. Every interaction, every conversation, every way we handle conflict or show affection, teaches them what relationships look like. We are their primary teachers in this area."
  2. Activity Introduction: Introduce the Activity: Relationship Check-In.
    • Instructions: Divide parents into small groups. Each group will select a common family scenario (e.g., disagreement over chores, child expressing big emotions, celebrating a success) and discuss how to model healthy relationship markers within that scenario. They should consider verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and setting boundaries.
  3. Group Work & Share Out: Allow 7-8 minutes for group discussion, then bring the groups back together to share key takeaways and examples of modeling.
    • Facilitator Tip: Encourage specific examples of language and actions.

Step 4

Practice Through Play: Communication Charades (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  1. Introduce Game: Explain that effective communication is vital. Introduce the Game: Communication Charades.
    • Instructions: Explain the rules of charades, focusing on acting out different emotions, communication styles, or healthy relationship actions (e.g., active listening, apologizing, comforting). The goal is to guess the action and then briefly discuss how that action contributes to a healthy relationship.
  2. Play Game: Facilitate 2-3 rounds, ensuring everyone has a chance to participate or guess.
  3. Debrief: Briefly discuss what made some communication efforts clearer than others. Relate this back to daily family interactions.

Step 5

Resources & Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  1. Resources: Present the Slide Deck: Healthy Relationship Habits (Slide 5) highlighting key takeaways. Distribute the Handout: Resources for Healthy Relationships (English & Spanish), emphasizing available community and online resources.
    • Spanish Translation Integration: Point out that the handout includes Spanish translations to support all families.
  2. Cool Down Activity: Conduct the Cool Down: My Relationship Superpower where parents write down one 'relationship superpower' they commit to practicing more often.
  3. Q&A and Thank You: Open the floor for any remaining questions. Thank parents for their engagement and commitment to fostering healthy relationships within their families.

Welcome to Healthy Relationship Habits

Building Stronger Connections at Home

  • What comes to mind when you hear 'healthy relationship'?
  • Today we'll explore key elements and practical ways to foster them in your family!

Welcome parents, introduce yourself, and briefly set the stage for why this workshop is important. Encourage a welcoming and open environment.

What Makes a Relationship Healthy?

Key Components:

  • Communication / Comunicación: Open, honest, active listening.
  • Respect / Respeto: Valuing opinions, boundaries, and individuality.
  • Trust / Confianza: Reliability and belief in each other.
  • Empathy / Empatía: Understanding and sharing feelings.
  • Boundaries / Límites: Clear expectations and personal space.

(We'll be using a checklist to help us reflect on these!)

Introduce the five core components. Briefly explain each one. This is a foundational slide for understanding. Mention the handout Handout: Healthy Relationship Checklist that will be distributed.

Modeling Matters

Our Children Are Always Watching!

  • Children learn by observation. How we interact teaches them about relationships.
  • Show, don't just tell. Demonstrate healthy communication, conflict resolution, and affection.
  • Practice makes progress! Every interaction is an opportunity to model positive behaviors.

Emphasize the power of modeling. Children learn by watching. Give a simple example, like 'If we want our kids to say please and thank you, we need to say it too.' Transition to the activity where they will practice modeling.

Let's Play: Communication Charades!

Practice Expressing & Understanding Emotions

  • Act out different emotions, communication styles, or healthy relationship actions.
  • Guess the action!
  • Discuss: How does this action contribute to a healthy relationship?

Introduce the 'Communication Charades' game. Explain the rules clearly and prepare to facilitate. Emphasize that this is a fun way to think about different communication styles.

Key Takeaways & Resources

Reflect & Grow

Activity

Activity: Relationship Check-In

Objective:

To collaboratively identify and practice modeling healthy relationship behaviors in common family scenarios.

Instructions:

  1. Form Small Groups: Please gather into small groups of 3-4 people.
  2. Choose a Scenario: As a group, select ONE of the following common family scenarios to discuss. You can also come up with your own if you prefer:
    • Your child is upset because a sibling took their toy without asking.
    • You and your partner disagree on a household rule in front of your children.
    • Your teenager is struggling with a friendship conflict and comes to you for advice.
    • Your child doesn't want to do their chores.
  3. Discuss and Model: For your chosen scenario, discuss how you would model healthy relationship markers for your children. Consider the following questions:
    • What would you say to demonstrate healthy communication, respect, or empathy?
    • What non-verbal cues (body language, tone of voice) would you use?
    • How would you set appropriate boundaries or encourage problem-solving?
    • What specific actions would you take to show healthy behavior?
  4. Prepare to Share: Choose one person from your group to briefly share your scenario and your group's key insights or a specific example of modeling with the larger group.

Group Reflection Questions:

  • What specific words or phrases did your group decide to use to model healthy communication?

  • How did you ensure respect was maintained, even if there was a disagreement?

  • What was one new idea about modeling healthy relationships that came from your group discussion?

  3. No Talking!: The actor must only use non-verbal cues (body language, gestures, facial expressions) to act out what's on the card. No talking, no sounds, no pointing to objects!
  4. Guessing Time: The team has 1 minute to guess the action or emotion. If they guess correctly, they get a point.
  5. Discuss: After a correct guess, we'll briefly discuss: "How does this action or emotion relate to building healthy relationships?" or "What message does this action send?"
  6. Next Team: Teams will take turns acting and guessing.
