Be active and healthy

This lesson aims to encourage active and healthy living through fun, physical activities and discussions. The activity will engage students in an interactive game that promotes physical movement, while the discussion will help them reflect on the importance of staying active and making healthy choices. This helps in building a healthy lifestyle, improves social skills, and promotes teamwork.

Cones or markers, Jump ropes, Hula hoops, Healthy Habits Discussion Questions, Balloons, and String or tape to create a “net”

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Welcome the students and explain the objective of the lesson: Being active and healthy.
  • Briefly discuss the importance of physical activity for overall health and well-being.
  • Explain how today’s activities and discussions will help them learn about being active and healthy.

Step 2

Icebreaker: Would You Rather

10 mins

  • Ask a series of 'Would you rather' questions (e.g., 'Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?').
  • Have students move to one side of the room for one option and the other side for the other option.
  • This gets students moving and thinking creatively.

Step 3

Warm-Up Activity

10 mins

  • Lead the students in a quick warm-up to prepare for physical activities.
    • Examples: Jumping jacks, stretching, light jogging in place.
  • Ensure all students have enough space to move around safely.

Step 4

Active Game: Balloon Volleyball

30 mins

  • Set up a balloon volleyball court using string or tape as a net.
  • Divide the students into two teams.
  • Explain the rules of balloon volleyball:
    • Use the balloon as the volleyball and pass it over the net.
    • Encourage students to keep the balloon in the air.
    • Emphasize safety, teamwork, and coordination.
  • Allow each team to play several rounds and ensure everyone has a turn.
  • After completing the balloon volleyball game, gather the students and discuss how physical activity can be fun and beneficial.

Discussion: Healthy Habits

10 mins

  • Transition from the active game to a seated discussion.
  • Use the Healthy Habits Discussion Questions to facilitate a conversation about the importance of regular physical activity and making healthy choices.
  • Encourage students to share their ideas and experiences.
  • Summarize key points from the discussion and reinforce the importance of staying active and healthy.

  • Recap the activities of the day and key takeaways about being active and healthy.
  • Encourage students to think of ways they can stay active at home and make healthy choices.
  • Thank the students for their participation and let them know they did a great job.
