Healthy vs Unhealthy Foods Lesson Plan

Students will learn to identify and categorize foods as healthy or unhealthy using visual aids and hands-on activities, and apply bilingual English/Portuguese vocabulary.

Understanding healthy vs unhealthy foods builds essential life skills for making better dietary choices and fosters independence in daily living for cognitively challenged students.

Purpose / Objetivo:
Students work in small groups to sort Healthy vs Unhealthy Food Picture Cards onto printed mats, reinforcing bilingual vocabulary and classification skills.

Materials / Materiais:

  1. Print two copies of the sorting mat template below for each group.
  2. Laminate mats or mount on cardstock for durability.
  3. Provide each group with one set of picture cards.

Instructions / Instruções

  1. Divide into small groups of 3–4 students.
  2. Place one “Healthy Foods / Alimentos Saudáveis” mat and one “Unhealthy Foods / Alimentos Não Saudáveis” mat in front of your group.
  3. Shuffle the Healthy vs Unhealthy Food Picture Cards and place them face down.
  4. Take turns drawing one card at a time.
  5. Discuss with your group whether the food is healthy or unhealthy.
  6. Place the card on the correct mat.
    • If using glue or Velcro, attach the card to the mat.
    • If not, simply lay the card in the column.
  7. Once all cards are sorted, review as a group: each student names one card on each mat in English and Portuguese.

Healthy vs Unhealthy Relay / Corrida de Alimentos Saudáveis vs Não Saudáveis

Purpose / Objetivo:
A fun, fast-paced relay to reinforce healthy vs unhealthy food classification and bilingual vocabulary.

Materials / Materiais:

Setup / Preparação:

  1. Mark a start line and place students behind it.
  2. At the opposite end of the room, set out two mats per team: one “Healthy Foods / Alimentos Saudáveis” and one “Unhealthy Foods / Alimentos Não Saudáveis.”
  3. Shuffle each team’s picture cards and stack them face down near the start line.
  4. Divide the class into two teams and have each team form a line behind the start line.

Instructions / Instruções

  1. On your signal (“Go! / Vamos!”), the first student from each team picks the top card from their team’s deck.
  2. The student holds up the card and says:
    • “This is _____ / Este é _____.”
    • “It is healthy / unhealthy. / É saudável / não saudável.”
  3. They run to the other end, place the card on the correct mat, then run back and tag the next teammate.
  4. The next student repeats steps 1–3.
  5. Continue until all cards are sorted.
  6. When a team finishes, they sit down quietly.
  7. After both teams finish, the teacher and teams review placements.

Winning / Vitória:

  • The first team to correctly sort all their cards and answer the review questions wins.
  • Celebrate both teams’ efforts and reinforce any corrections.

Teacher: Good morning, class! Bom dia, turma!
Teacher: Today we are going to learn about foods that are healthy and foods that are not healthy, in both English and Portuguese. Hoje vamos aprender sobre alimentos saudáveis e não saudáveis, em inglês e português.

Teacher: Let’s start by practicing some key words. Repitam após mim:

  • Apple – maçã
  • Carrot – cenoura

Teacher: We’ll use our Bilingual Food Vocabulary List (English/Portuguese) to help with pronunciations and spellings.
