Preparation / Preparação:
- Print two copies of the sorting mat template below for each group.
- Laminate mats or mount on cardstock for durability.
- Provide each group with one set of picture cards.

- Divide into small groups of 3–4 students.
- Place one “Healthy Foods / Alimentos Saudáveis” mat and one “Unhealthy Foods / Alimentos Não Saudáveis” mat in front of your group.
- Shuffle the Healthy vs Unhealthy Food Picture Cards and place them face down.
- Take turns drawing one card at a time.
- Discuss with your group whether the food is healthy or unhealthy.
- Place the card on the correct mat.
- If using glue or Velcro, attach the card to the mat.
- If not, simply lay the card in the column.
- Once all cards are sorted, review as a group: each student names one card on each mat in English and Portuguese.

Materials / Materiais:
- One set of Healthy vs Unhealthy Food Picture Cards per team
- Two Sorting Mats for Foods Activity per team
- Cones or tape to mark start and finish lines (optional)
Setup / Preparação:
- Mark a start line and place students behind it.
- At the opposite end of the room, set out two mats per team: one “Healthy Foods / Alimentos Saudáveis” and one “Unhealthy Foods / Alimentos Não Saudáveis.”
- Shuffle each team’s picture cards and stack them face down near the start line.
- Divide the class into two teams and have each team form a line behind the start line.
Instructions / Instruções
- On your signal (“Go! / Vamos!”), the first student from each team picks the top card from their team’s deck.
- The student holds up the card and says:
- “This is _____ / Este é _____.”
- “It is healthy / unhealthy. / É saudável / não saudável.”
- They run to the other end, place the card on the correct mat, then run back and tag the next teammate.
- The next student repeats steps 1–3.
- Continue until all cards are sorted.
- When a team finishes, they sit down quietly.
- After both teams finish, the teacher and teams review placements.
