Your Brain: A Superpower!
Did you know your brain is like a muscle?
The more you use it, the stronger it gets!
Today, we'll learn about a 'growth mindset'!
Welcome students and introduce the concept of a 'growth mindset'. Ask what they think it means to have a brain that can grow.
Sometimes We Think...
Fixed Mindset: Believing you can't get better at something.
"I can't do it!"
"It's too hard!"
"I'm not smart enough."
How do these thoughts make you feel?
Explain 'fixed mindset' and give examples. Emphasize that it's okay to feel this way sometimes, but we can change our thinking.
But What If...?
Growth Mindset: Believing you can improve with effort and practice!
"I can't do it yet!"
"This is a challenge, I'll try my best!"
"Mistakes help me learn!"
How do these thoughts make you feel?
Introduce 'growth mindset' and its benefits. Use relatable examples for K-4 students.
Fixed vs. Growth: Let's Choose!
Listen to these ideas:
- "This math problem is too tricky. I give up."
- "I don't know this word yet, but I can sound it out!"
- "I'm not good at drawing, so I won't try."
- "I'll ask for help and keep practicing my drawing!"
Which ones show a growth mindset?
Show specific examples of statements and discuss which mindset they represent and why. Encourage student participation.
My Brain Can Grow! Activity
Now it's your turn!
Think of something you learned by trying hard, even if it was tricky at first.
Draw a picture or write about it!
Introduce the 'My Brain Can Grow!' activity. Explain they will draw or write about a time they learned by trying.
Be a Mindset Master!
Your brain is amazing and can always grow!
Remember to say "I can't do it yet"!
See you next time, Mindset Movers!
Summarize the day's learning and encourage using 'yet'.

Day 1: Growth Mindset Unlocked! Script
Introduction (5 minutes)
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 1)
"Hello, incredible K-4 scholars! Welcome to the start of our 'Growth Mindset Journey'! This week, we're going to discover something super important about our brains and how we learn."
"Did you know your brain is like a muscle? Just like when you exercise your arms or legs, the more you use your brain, the stronger it gets! Today, we're going to talk about having a growth mindset."
"What do you think that means? A 'growth mindset'? Turn and talk to a partner for a moment. What does it mean to have a brain that can grow?"
(Allow 1-2 minutes for partner talk, then call on a few students to share.)
"Wonderful ideas! You're already thinking like growth mindset champions!"
Fixed vs. Growth Mindset (10 minutes)
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 2)
"Sometimes, when things are tough, we might hear a little voice in our heads saying, 'I can't do it!' or 'This is too hard!' That's what we call a fixed mindset. It's like your brain is saying, 'Nope, I'm stuck, I can't change.' How do those kinds of thoughts make you feel?"
(Facilitate a brief discussion about how fixed mindset thoughts make them feel – e.g., sad, frustrated, wanting to give up.)
"It's okay to feel that way sometimes, but we're going to learn how to change those thoughts!"
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 3)
"Now, imagine a different little voice! This voice says, 'I can't do it yet, but I can try!' or 'This is a challenge, and I'll learn from it!' That's a growth mindset! It means believing that with effort and practice, your brain can get smarter and better at anything! How do these thoughts make you feel?"
(Facilitate discussion – e.g., hopeful, motivated, excited to try.)
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 4)
"Let's practice! I'll say some sentences, and you tell me if it sounds like a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Ready?"
"1. 'This math problem is too tricky. I give up.' (Pause) Fixed or Growth? Why?"
"2. 'I don't know this word yet, but I can sound it out!' (Pause) Fixed or Growth? Why?"
"3. 'I'm not good at drawing, so I won't try.' (Pause) Fixed or Growth? Why?"
"4. 'I'll ask for help and keep practicing my drawing!' (Pause) Fixed or Growth? Why?"
(Guide students to identify and explain their reasoning.)
My Brain Can Grow! Activity (10 minutes)
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 5)
"You are all doing an amazing job understanding growth mindset! Now, I'm going to give you a worksheet for our Day 1 My Brain Can Grow! Worksheet."
"On this worksheet, I want you to draw a picture or write about a time you learned something new by trying hard. Maybe you learned to ride a bike, tie your shoes, or read a challenging book. Think about how your brain grew!"
(Distribute the Day 1 My Brain Can Grow! Worksheet and walk around to assist students. Encourage them to share their experiences.)
Wrap-up (5 minutes)
(Teacher displays Day 1 Growth Mindset Unlocked! Slide Deck - Slide 6)
"Wow, these are wonderful examples of your brains growing! Can a few of you share what you drew or wrote about?"
(Call on a few students to share.)
"Fantastic! Remember, your brain is a superpower that can always grow! The most important thing is to keep trying, even when things are tough, and to add the word 'yet' when you feel stuck. 'I can't do it yet!'"
"Thank you for being such amazing Mindset Movers today! See you next time!"
