Growth Mindset Garden

Recognize personal perseverance

In this lesson, students will explore the concept of a growth mindset by reflecting on tasks they initially found difficult but eventually mastered. Through discussion and a creative activity, students will recognize and celebrate their personal perseverance and progress. This lesson is important as it helps students build resilience and a positive attitude towards learning challenges.

Step 1

Introduction to Growth Mindset

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students if they have ever found something difficult but eventually got better at it.
  • Introduce the concept of a growth mindset: the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
  • Explain that today they will be reflecting on their own growth experiences.

Step 2

Reflective Discussion

10 minutes

  • Hand out post-it notes and markers to each student.
  • Ask students to think of a task they initially found difficult but eventually mastered.
  • Have students write down their task on the post-it note.
  • Facilitate a brief discussion where students can share their experiences with the class.

Step 3

Growth Mindset Garden Activity

10 minutes

  • Provide each student with a 'Growth Mindset Card' and ask them to draw or write about their experience on it.
  • Collect the cards and arrange them on a large poster paper to create a 'Growth Mindset Garden'.
  • Encourage students to decorate the garden with drawings of flowers, trees, or other plants.

  • Gather students around the 'Growth Mindset Garden'.
  • Highlight the variety of challenges and successes represented in the garden.
