Growing Strong: The Strength Tree

Build resilience and self-esteem

In this lesson, students will create a 'strength tree' that symbolizes their personal growth, achievements, and resilience. This activity helps reinforce self-esteem and personal motivation by allowing students to visually represent their skills and qualities. By focusing on their strengths, students can build a positive self-image and develop resilience, which is crucial for their emotional and social development.

Step 1

Introduction to Resilience

5 minutes

  • Begin with a brief discussion on what resilience means.
  • Ask students to share examples of when they showed resilience.
  • Explain that today they will create a 'strength tree' to represent their personal strengths and achievements.

Step 2

Creating the Strength Tree

15 minutes

  • Distribute paper, colored pencils, scissors, and glue to each student.
  • Instruct students to draw a tree trunk and branches on their paper.
  • Using the worksheet, guide students to identify their strengths and write them on 'leaves' they will cut out.
  • Have students glue their leaves onto their tree, creating a visual representation of their strengths.

Step 3

Reflection and Sharing

10 minutes

  • Invite students to share their strength trees with the class.
  • Encourage them to explain why they chose certain strengths and how these have helped them in the past.
  • Conclude with a discussion on how recognizing our strengths can help us overcome challenges.
