Lesson Plan

Grow Your Goals

Students will learn to set specific, attainable, and realistic personal learning goals using bilingual visuals and structured steps, then practice creating and sharing their own goal statements.

Teaching goal-setting builds self-management (Texas TEKS), fosters ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors like self-confidence and organization, and empowers students to take ownership of their learning; visuals support Spanish-speaking learners.

Audience

2nd Grade Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive slides, hands-on goal wheels, and guided worksheets.

Materials

  • Grow Your Goals Slide Deck, * Goal-Setting Worksheet, * Goal Growth Activity Cards, and * Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español

Prep

Preparation

10 minutes

  • Review and familiarize yourself with the Grow Your Goals Slide Deck, Goal-Setting Worksheet, Goal Growth Activity Cards, and Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español.
  • Print one worksheet and one visual goal wheel per student; print two sets of activity cards and cut them out.
  • Load the slide deck on the classroom projector and queue the first slide.
  • Prepare vocabulary support cards in English and Spanish for key terms: “goal/objetivo,” “specific/específico,” “attainable/alcanzable,” “realistic/realista.”

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Greet students and ask: “What is a goal?” Invite responses in English or Spanish; display bilingual terms with visuals.
  • Discuss why goals help us learn and succeed (e.g., practice makes us better readers).
  • Show a simple example on the slide deck (e.g., “I will color one picture every day”).

Step 2

Teaching Specific Goals

7 minutes

  • Use the slide deck to define “Specific,” “Attainable,” and “Realistic” with child-friendly language and bilingual visuals.
  • Contrast a vague goal (“I will be the best reader”) with a clear one (“I will read for 10 minutes every day”).
  • Highlight bilingual labels under each example to support Spanish speakers.

Step 3

Goal-Setting Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español and Goal Growth Activity Cards.
  • Students choose an activity card (e.g., “Practice spelling 5 new words”) and place it in the “My Goal” section of the wheel.
  • In pairs, students discuss two steps they will take; use vocabulary cards for support.

Step 4

Worksheet Application

5 minutes

  • Hand out the Goal-Setting Worksheet.
  • Students write their own goal, list 2–3 steps, and draw a picture illustrating progress; encourage bilingual labels if helpful.
  • Circulate to provide language support and check understanding.

Step 5

Reflection & Share

3 minutes

  • Invite 3–4 volunteers to share their goal and steps; reinforce positive feedback.
  • Encourage students to keep their worksheet in journals or backpacks as a reminder.
  • Summarize how setting clear goals helps us grow.

Slide Deck

Grow Your Goals

Setting specific, attainable, and realistic goals!

Welcome the class and introduce today’s lesson. Say: "Today we're going to learn how to set goals that help us grow!" Explain that a goal (objetivo) is something you want to do or learn.

What Is a Goal?

A goal (objetivo) is something you want to do or learn.
Goals help us focus and grow.

Ask: “What is a goal?” Invite responses in English or Spanish. Display visuals of a child reading or drawing. Reinforce the bilingual term objetivo/goal.

Specific, Attainable, Realistic

Specific (específico): Clear and detailed
Attainable (alcanzable): You can do it
Realistic (realista): It makes sense for you

Read each term aloud, pointing to child-friendly images. Encourage students to repeat both English and Spanish.

From Vague to Clear

Vague: “I will be the best reader.”
Clear: “I will read for 10 minutes every day.”

Show the slide and guide students to compare. Ask: “Which goal tells us exactly what to do?” Highlight the clear goal.

Using the Goal Wheel

  1. Find “My Goal” on the Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español
  2. Place your activity card in the wheel
  3. Draw or write 2–3 steps around the wheel edges

Explain the wheel. Show the Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español. Demonstrate placing a card and writing steps.

Pick an Activity Card

Choose a card from the Goal Growth Activity Cards, such as:
• Practice spelling 5 new words
• Draw for 15 minutes
• Read a book with a partner
Then add it to your wheel.

Display sample cards from the Goal Growth Activity Cards. Model choosing one and adding it to your wheel.

Let’s Recap

  1. Goals help us grow
  2. Be Specific, Attainable, Realistic
  3. Use the wheel and steps to guide you

Summarize the lesson. Emphasize that clear goals help us succeed. Encourage students to remember the three key words.

Share & Reflect

Turn to a partner or raise your hand to share:
• Your goal
• The steps you will take
Keep your worksheet in your folder!

Invite 3–4 volunteers to share their goal and steps. Provide positive feedback in both languages and remind students to keep their worksheet.

Activity

Visual Goal Wheel—English & Español

Use this printable—or copy by hand—goal wheel to help students see their main goal in the center and the steps they’ll take around the edge. Teachers can enlarge to fill a full 8½×11" page.

How to Create the Wheel Template

  1. Draw a large circle (about 7–8 inches in diameter) on your paper or slide. This is the outer wheel.
  2. Draw a smaller circle (about 2½–3 inches across) centered inside the larger circle. This is the “My Goal” area.
  3. From the edge of the small circle, draw four (or six) straight lines out to the edge of the large circle, dividing the outer ring into equal “slices.”
  4. Label and decorate:
    • Center Circle (My Goal / Mi Objetivo): Students will place their activity card here or write their goal directly.
    • Each Outer Slice (Step 1 / Paso 1, Step 2 / Paso 2, etc.): Students write or draw one action step in each slice.

Teacher Copy Example (Simplified ASCII Diagram)

  _____________
 / \
/ Slice 1 \

/ (Paso 1)
| ______ |
| / \ | ←– Small center circle:
| | My Goal | | “My Goal / Mi Objetivo”
| ______/ |
| |
\ Slice 4 /
\ (Paso 4) /
___________/

(Students’ wheel will have slices around the entire circle.)

Student Directions

  1. Place or write your chosen goal in the center circle. / Coloca o escribe tu objetivo en el círculo central.
  2. In each outer slice, write or draw one step you will take. / En cada sección externa, escribe o dibuja un paso para lograr tu objetivo.
  3. Color and decorate your wheel. / Colorea y decora tu rueda.
  4. Keep this wheel visible in class or at home to remind you of your goal! / ¡Mantén esta rueda a la vista para recordarte tu objetivo!

—
Tip: If you want six steps instead of four, simply draw six slices. Laminate completed wheels for a classroom display or reuse.
