Gratitude Game Guide
Students will practice self-management and optimism by recognizing and expressing gratitude in a fun, gamified whole-class activity, earning points for positive contributions and creating thank-you notes.
Cultivating gratitude strengthens self-awareness, encourages optimism, and builds positive social skills, enhancing classroom climate and supporting CASEL competencies.

Thankful Tiles Slides, Gratitude Bingo, Thank-You Card Craft, Points Chart (whiteboard), and Markers or Chalk
Prep
Prepare Materials
10 minutes
- Review the Thankful Tiles Slides to familiarize yourself with prompts and visuals
- Print or photocopy enough Gratitude Bingo cards for each student
- Gather paper, crayons, stickers, and envelopes for the Thank-You Card Craft
- Draw a simple points chart on the whiteboard with columns: “Student” and “Points”
- Decide on team or individual play based on class size
Step 1
Introduction & Rules
5 minutes
- Gather students on the carpet and introduce the concept of gratitude
- Display the Thankful Tiles Slides and read example prompts (e.g., “I’m grateful for…”)
- Explain the points system:
- +1 point for sharing something they’re thankful for
- +2 points for giving a gratitude-based compliment to someone else
- Post rules: listen respectfully, raise hands, and take turns sharing
Step 2
The Gratitude Game
15 minutes
- Distribute one Gratitude Bingo card per student or small group
- Call out gratitude prompts from the bingo cards; students mark a square when they share a matching statement
- Award points on the chart as students respond (individual or team play)
- First to get Bingo (five in a row) earns a +5 bonus
- Continue until time is up or multiple Bingos are achieved
- Differentiation:
- ELLs may draw a picture instead of speaking
- Students needing support can pair-share before speaking
Step 3
Reflection & Thank-You Cards
10 minutes
- Invite students to reflect: “How did it feel to express and hear gratitude?”
- Have each student choose a peer or family member to thank using the Thank-You Card Craft
- Prompt: “What are you thanking them for?” as students write or draw their notes
- Circulate to assist and encourage specific details
- If time allows, let students share their cards in pairs
- Conclude by tallying class points, celebrating achievements, and encouraging ongoing gratitude at home

How to Play
- Watch for a gratitude prompt on each tile
- Raise your hand and share your answer
- Earn points when you share or compliment a classmate

Get ready to play a 3×3 bingo game all about things we’re thankful for!
What’s in the Card
- 3 rows × 3 columns of gratitude prompts
- Each square has a different “I’m thankful for…” idea:
- My family
- My friends
- My pet
- My favorite food
- My teacher
- Books to read
- Sunny days
- My home
- Fun games
How to Play (Teacher-Led)
- Give each student (or group) one bingo card.
- Call out one prompt at a time (e.g., “I’m thankful for my pet”).
- Students look for that prompt on their card. If they have it, they mark the square (with a sticker or crayon).
- When a student marks three in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally), they call out “Bingo!”
- Have that student share what they’re grateful for in that square.
- Award +5 bonus points for a Bingo.
- Clear cards and play again as time allows!
Printing & Prep Notes
- Print one Gratitude Bingo sheet per student/group.
- Cards are ready-to-go; no need to shuffle if time is tight.
- For variety, teachers can swap prompts between cards before copying.
- Use stickers or dot markers for marking squares; crayons work too.
- Remind students to listen and share complete sentences (e.g., “I’m thankful for my pet because…”).
Cool Down
Thank-You Card Craft
As our cool-down exit activity, students will create heartfelt thank-you cards to practice expressing gratitude in writing and art. This reinforces optimism and self-management skills.
Materials
- Blank folded cardstock or construction paper (one per student)
- Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
- Stickers, stamps, or decorative tape (optional)
- Envelopes (optional)

Introduce the Activity (2 minutes)
- Explain: “Today we’ll make thank-you cards for someone special—a friend, family member, or classmate. We’ll practice writing a clear message and decorating our cards to show how much we care.”

- Prompt students: “On the front, draw a picture or write the person’s name with decorations.”
- Distribute cardstock and art supplies.
- Encourage creativity: stickers, borders, or bold lettering.

Pair-Share & Gallery Walk (3 minutes)
- If time allows, have students pair up and read their cards aloud to a partner.
- Invite volunteers to display their cards on a table or bulletin board for a quick “gallery walk.”

- Gather back together and ask: “How did it feel to say thank you in a special way?”
- Reinforce that showing appreciation helps our community stay positive and kind.
