Why Set Goals?

  • Gives you direction and focus
  • Boosts motivation when things get challenging
  • Lets you measure progress and celebrate wins

Think: What do you want to achieve this year?

Welcome the class and introduce the idea of goal-setting. Say: “Today, we’re kicking off the year by setting one academic goal and one personal goal. Goals give us focus, motivation, and help us track our progress.” Highlight that everyone will get to share and play a quick game.

Say: “Let’s watch a quick video on how staying motivated helps us reach our goals.”
Play the video and then ask students: “What idea from the video stood out? How can you use that as you set your goals?”

Types of Goals

Academic Goals:

  • Improve my math grade by one letter
  • Read 10 books this semester

Personal Goals:

  • Join the basketball team
  • Practice piano 3 times a week

Now, think of one of each in your notebook.

Explain that goals come in two main types. Say: “Academic goals help us in school—like improving in math or reading more books. Personal goals help us outside class—like joining a club or learning a new hobby.” Offer sentence starters on the board for those who need extra support.

Goal-Setting Bingo

  1. Hand out each student a Bingo card.
  2. I’ll call out goal prompts (e.g., “Read 5 books,” “Improve science grade”).
  3. Mark any matching squares on your card.
  4. First to Bingo stands, shares one academic and one personal goal.

Keep your goals somewhere you see them every day!

Introduce the Bingo game: “We’ll use Goal-Setting Bingo to inspire our ideas. I’ll call out prompts. Mark any that match your goals. First person to get Bingo shares their academic and personal goal!” Remind students to keep their goals visible on their lockers or notebooks.
