Slide Deck

Goals, Grit, & Good Vibes!

Ready to think positively and set some awesome goals?

Welcome students and introduce the topic of positive thinking and New Year's goals. Engage them by asking what 'good vibes' means to them.

What are 'Good Vibes'?

When you feel happy, energetic, and hopeful, you're experiencing good vibes!

What makes you feel good vibes?

Ask students to share what 'good vibes' means. This opens the discussion on positive feelings.

Positive Thinking Power!

Positive thinking is choosing to look for the good in situations, even when things are tough.

Instead of 'I can't do it,' you say, 'I'll try my best!'

Explain positive thinking. Provide simple examples relevant to their lives.

Being an Optimist!

Optimism is having hope and confidence that good things will happen.

An optimist sees the glass as half full!

Explain optimism and how it relates to positive thinking. Give an example like expecting a sunny day.

Why is it important?

Positive thinking and optimism help us:
* Feel happier
* Be more confident
* Solve problems
* Reach our goals!

Discuss why these mindsets are important for achieving goals and handling challenges.

My Awesome Goals!

The New Year is a great time to think about new goals!

What's something you want to achieve or get better at?

Introduce the idea of setting goals, especially for a new year. Emphasize that goals should be things they want to achieve.

Positive Thinking + Goals = Success!

When you think positively, you believe in yourself! This helps you:
* Keep trying, even if it's hard
* Learn from mistakes
* Celebrate your progress

Connect positive thinking directly to goal achievement. How can a positive attitude help them stick with a goal?

You've Got This!

Remember your mighty mindset! You have the power to think positively and achieve amazing things.

Conclude with a final positive thought and encourage them to use what they've learned.

Game

Goal Getter Game: Positive Power-Ups!

Game Objective

To practice positive self-talk and identify optimistic responses to challenges related to goals.

Materials Needed

  • Small ball or soft object to pass
  • List of challenge scenarios (provided below)

How to Play (8 minutes)

  1. Form a Circle: Have students sit in a circle.
  2. Introduce the Game: Explain that you'll be playing a game to help them think positively when they face challenges in reaching their goals. Tell them it's called "Goal Getter: Positive Power-Ups!"
  3. Start the Scenario: The teacher will say a common challenge a student might face when trying to reach a goal. For example: "You want to get better at reading, but a book feels too hard."
  4. Pass and Respond: The teacher passes the ball to a student. That student must say a positive and optimistic response to the challenge. They can say things like:
    • "I can do it if I try hard!"
    • "I will ask for help."
    • "I will read a little bit every day."
    • "I know I can learn this."
    • "I will keep practicing."
  5. Pass it On: After the student gives their positive response, they pass the ball to another student. The next student either gives another positive response to the same scenario or the teacher introduces a new scenario.
  6. Teacher's Role: Encourage all students to participate. If a student struggles, prompt them with examples or guide them to rephrase a negative thought into a positive one.

Challenge Scenarios (Choose 3-4 for a 8-minute game)

  • Scenario 1: You are trying to learn a new math skill, but you don't get it on the first try.

  • Scenario 2: You want to make a new friend, but you feel shy to talk to them.

  • Scenario 3: You have a goal to keep your room tidy, but sometimes it gets messy very quickly.

  • Scenario 4: You want to score a goal in soccer, but you keep missing.

  • Scenario 5: You want to write a great story, but you can't think of what to write next.

  • Scenario 6: You promised to help a parent with chores, but you'd rather play.

Positive Reinforcement

Always praise students for their participation and their positive thinking!
