Goals for a Great Year Lesson Plan
Students will be able to identify personal goals for the new year and brainstorm steps to achieve them.
Setting goals helps students learn self-motivation, planning, and perseverance. It provides a framework for personal growth and achievement, both in and out of the classroom.

10 minutes
- Review the New Year, New Goals Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
- Print copies of the My Awesome Goals Worksheet for each student.
- Print copies of the My Goal Tracker Activity for each student.
- Gather pencils or crayons for student use.
- Ensure a whiteboard or chart paper is available for group brainstorming.
Step 1
Introduction: What's a Goal?
5 minutes
- Begin by asking students: "What is a goal? Has anyone ever set a goal before?"
2. Facilitate a brief discussion, using examples like learning to ride a bike or reading a new book.
3. Introduce the idea of setting goals for a 'New Year' and how it's a fresh start for new adventures and learning. Refer to New Year, New Goals Slide Deck Slide 1-2.
Step 2
Brainstorming Goals
10 minutes
- Lead a discussion on different types of goals: academic, personal, social.
2. Encourage students to think about things they want to learn, get better at, or try in the new year.
3. Write down a few examples on the board to spark ideas. Refer to New Year, New Goals Slide Deck Slide 3-4.
Step 3
My Awesome Goals Worksheet
10 minutes
- Distribute the My Awesome Goals Worksheet to each student.
2. Guide students through the worksheet, helping them write down 1-2 personal goals.
3. Encourage them to think about small steps they can take to achieve their goals. Circulate and provide individualized support. Refer to New Year, New Goals Slide Deck Slide 5.
Step 4
Goal Tracker Introduction
5 minutes
- Introduce the My Goal Tracker Activity to students.
2. Explain how they can use it to keep track of their progress on their goals throughout the year.
3. Encourage them to decorate their trackers and keep them in a safe place.
Step 5
Sharing & Wrap-up
5 minutes
- Invite students to share one of their goals with the group, if they feel comfortable.
2. Reiterate the importance of working towards goals and celebrating small successes.
3. Collect the My Awesome Goals Worksheet for review or to return to students for them to keep. Refer to New Year, New Goals Slide Deck Slide 6.

Explain that the new year is a perfect time for a fresh start and thinking about new things they want to achieve.
