SMART Goals

Your Roadmap to Success!

Welcome everyone! Today we’ll learn how to set goals that truly guide us to success. Introduce the term “SMART” and let students know they’ll practice creating their own SMART goal by the end of class.

Why Set SMART Goals?

• Provides clear direction
• Helps track progress
• Boosts motivation and confidence

Explain why vague goals often fail. Emphasize that SMART goals make our plans clear and achievable. Ask for a quick show of hands: Who’s set a goal before?

S is for Specific

Definition:
• Clearly states what you want to accomplish

Example:
• “I will read 10 pages of my history textbook each night.”

Define “Specific.” Ask students: What questions help make a goal specific? (What, why, who, where, which)

M is for Measurable

Definition:
• Includes criteria for tracking progress

Example:
• “I will complete and submit 5 math problems daily.”

Define “Measurable.” Prompt: How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal?

A is for Achievable

Definition:
• Challenging yet attainable with your skills and resources

Example:
• “I will attend one extra tutoring session each week.”

Define “Achievable.” Discuss realistic versus unrealistic goals. Ask: What support might you need?

R is for Relevant

Definition:
• Aligns with your values, needs, and broader objectives

Example:
• “Improving my writing will help me in all my classes.”

Define “Relevant.” Connect goals to students’ priorities and long-term plans. Ask: Why does this matter to you?

T is for Time-bound

Definition:
• Sets a clear deadline or timeframe

Example:
• “By the end of this semester, I will raise my GPA from 3.0 to 3.3.”

Define “Time-bound.” Stress the importance of deadlines. Ask: What’s your target date?

Putting It All Together

Example SMART Goal:
“I will improve my biology grade from a B to an A by studying 30 minutes daily, attending weekly review sessions, and completing all practice quizzes before finals.”

Show how all elements combine. Point out each SMART component in the example.

Your Turn: Draft a SMART Goal

Use your worksheet to write a goal that is:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Achievable
• Relevant
• Time-bound

Distribute the Brainstorming Worksheet now. Encourage students to draft one personal SMART goal, using each criterion. Circulate to support and answer questions.
