Prep
Prepare Materials
15 minutes

Step 1
Warm-Up: What Do We Want to Grow?
5 minutes
- Begin by asking students: "Imagine our classroom is a garden. What are some things you want to grow this semester, both in school and in your life?"
* Allow students to share ideas briefly. Connect their ideas to the concept of 'goals.'
Step 2
Introduction: The Goal Gardeners
10 minutes
- Introduce the lesson using the Goal Gardeners Slide Deck.
* Explain the gardening metaphor: goals are like plants, and we are the gardeners who nurture them.
* Discuss what makes a healthy plant (sun, water, good soil) and relate it to what makes a good goal (clear, actionable steps, resources, celebration).

15 minutes
- Distribute the My Goal Seed Packet Activity.
* Guide students to choose one academic goal and one personal goal they want to work on.

Step 5
Designing Our Growth Journal
15 minutes
- Have students decorate the cover of their My Goal Growth Journal.
* Explain how they will use the journal throughout the semester to record their efforts, challenges, and successes for each 'seed step.'
* Students should write their initial thoughts on their chosen goals in their journal.
Step 6
Wrap-Up & Project Introduction
5 minutes
- Review the main points: setting goals, breaking them down, identifying resources, and tracking progress.
* Introduce the Goal Garden Project Guide for a longer-term application of their learning.
* Encourage students to share one small step they can take towards a goal this week. Collect My Goal Seed Packet Activity to review and provide feedback.

Welcome, Goal Gardeners!
What do you want to grow this semester?
- In school?
- In your life?
Welcome students and get them thinking about what they want to achieve. Use the whiteboard to quickly jot down some of their ideas.
Goals Are Like Plants
To grow a beautiful garden, you need to:
- Plant a seed (Set a Goal!)
- Give it sun (Effort and Hard Work)
- Give it water (Resources and Support)
- Nurture it daily (Take Small Steps!)
What else do plants need? What do our goals need to grow?
Explain the metaphor clearly. Goals are like plants; they need care to grow. Ask students to think about what plants need.
Planting Our Seed Goals
Big goals can feel overwhelming, like a giant tree!
Instead, let's plant seed goals.
Each seed goal needs seed steps to grow:
- Small, actionable things you can do.
- Like giving your plant a little water each day.
Introduce the idea of 'seed goals' and 'seed steps.' Emphasize that big goals are easier to tackle when broken down. Give a simple example.
Your Goal Seed Packet
Today, you'll choose two seed goals:
- One for school 🏫
- One for your personal life ✨
Then, you'll list the seed steps needed to help them grow!
Transition to the 'My Goal Seed Packet Activity.' Explain that they will be writing their goals and steps on this activity sheet.
Nurturing Our Goals: Resources
Every plant needs resources to thrive. What do our goals need?
- People: Teachers, family, friends, mentors
- Tools: Books, computer, planner
- Habits: Time to study, asking for help, practicing
What resources will you use to help your goals grow?
Discuss different types of resources. Encourage students to think broadly – not just materials, but people and habits too.
Your Goal Growth Journal
This journal is your special place to:
- Track your seed steps.
- Write about your progress.
- Celebrate your achievements!
- Reflect on challenges and how you overcame them.
Introduce the concept of the journal as a place for reflection and tracking progress. Explain its purpose for the semester.
Let's Grow Together!
Remember, every big plant started as a tiny seed.
Be a great Goal Gardener for your own aspirations!
What's one seed step you can take this week?
Summarize the key takeaways and introduce the longer-term project. Encourage students to think about their first small step.

Project Guide
Goal Garden Project: My Growing Aspirations
Welcome, Master Goal Gardeners!
Throughout this semester, you will be creating your very own Goal Garden! This project is a way to visually represent the academic and personal goals you are nurturing, track your progress, and celebrate your growth.
Project Objective:
To create a visual and reflective project that demonstrates your understanding of goal setting, planning, and perseverance by representing your academic and personal goals as a growing garden.
Materials You Will Need:
- Large piece of construction paper or poster board
- Crayons, colored pencils, markers
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Magazines (optional, for cutting out pictures)
- Your My Goal Seed Packet Activity
- Your My Goal Growth Journal
Instructions:
Step 1: Design Your Garden Layout (Week 1-2)
- On your poster board or large paper, draw or create the basic layout of your garden. Think about a title for your garden (e.g., "My Growth Garden," "Aspirations Bloom").
- Divide your garden into two main sections: one for Academic Goals and one for Personal Goals.
Step 2: Plant Your Goal Seeds (Week 2-3)
- Based on your My Goal Seed Packet Activity, create a visual representation for each of your big goals (academic and personal). These can be drawings of plants, symbols, or pictures cut from magazines.
- Glue these onto your poster in their respective sections.
Step 3: Grow Your Seed Steps (Throughout the Semester)
- For each of your main goals, use smaller pieces of paper, drawings, or cut-outs to represent your seed steps. As you complete a seed step (and record it in your My Goal Growth Journal), you will add this piece to your garden, showing your plant growing!
- You can draw a root system for completed foundational steps, leaves for ongoing efforts, and flowers for major milestones.
Step 4: Add Resources (Throughout the Semester)
- Around your goal plants, add drawings or labels for the resources you identified in your My Goal Seed Packet Activity and those you discover along the way. These could be people (teacher, family), tools (books, computer), or helpful habits (quiet study time).
Step 5: Reflect and Celebrate (Ongoing & End of Semester)
- Regularly refer to your My Goal Growth Journal to update your garden. When you complete a major part of a goal, add something special to your garden (e.g., a blooming flower, a ripe fruit).
- At the end of the semester, you will present your Goal Garden to the class, explaining your goals, your journey, and what you learned.
Assessment:
Your Goal Garden Project will be assessed based on:
- Clarity of Goals: Are your academic and personal goals clearly represented?
- Evidence of Steps: Is there clear evidence of your seed steps and progress towards your goals?
- Resource Identification: Have you included resources that support your goals?
- Reflection: Does your project and journal entries show thoughtful reflection on your journey?
- Creativity and Effort: Is your Goal Garden visually engaging and does it show effort?
