Approach

Materials

Discussion Questions, Worksheet: Acts of Generosity, and Pledge Cards

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Begin with a short story or anecdote about generosity and charity. For example, "Let me tell you about a time when a group of students organized a bake sale to raise money for a local animal shelter. They donated all the proceeds to help care for the animals. This story shows how generosity and charity can make a real difference in the community."
  • Define generosity as the quality of being kind and giving freely without expecting anything in return. Define charity as the act of giving help, typically in the form of money, to those in need.
  • Explain the difference: Generosity is a broader concept that includes acts of kindness and giving, while charity specifically involves helping those in need, often through organized efforts.
  • Ask students, "Can you think of a time when someone was generous to you or when you were generous to someone else? How did it make you feel?"

Step 2

Guided Discussion

3 minutes

  • Use the provided discussion questions to explore the importance of generosity and charity. Say, "Let's talk about what generosity and charity mean to us. Why do you think these qualities are important?"
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and experiences. "Who would like to share a story about a time they witnessed or participated in a charitable act?"

Step 3

Independent Practice

3 minutes

  • Distribute the worksheet on acts of generosity and pledge cards. "Now, I want you to think about one act of generosity or charity you can perform this week. Write it down on your worksheet."
  • Ask students to create a pledge card to remind them of their commitment. "Use the pledge card to write down your promise. This will help you remember to follow through with your act of kindness."

Step 4

Closure

2 minutes

  • Invite a few students to share their planned acts of generosity and how they plan to implement them. "Who would like to share their pledge and how they plan to make it happen?"
  • Conclude with a reflection activity where students discuss how planning an act of generosity or charity made them feel and what they learned from the lesson. "Reflect on how it feels to plan an act of kindness. What did you learn about yourself and the impact you can have on others?"
