Coach Check-In Script

Session: Future Focus Framework
Duration: 20 minutes
Materials: Future Steps Journal, Goal-Setting Debrief

1. Warm-Up & Greeting (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Hi [Student Name], good to see you today!
How are you feeling right now?"

Pause and listen. Offer positive feedback.

Teacher: "Today, we’re going to talk about the goal you set last time and plan our next steps. Sound good?"

2. Review Your Long-Term Goal (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Let’s start by reminding ourselves of your long-term goal.
Can you tell me what your main goal is?"

Pause to let student respond.

Teacher: "That’s right. Your goal is to [student’s long-term goal].
Why was that goal important to you?"

If student hesitates, prompt:
Teacher: "What would you feel or be able to do if you reached this goal?"

Listen and validate.

3. Check In on Progress & Challenges (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Last time, we broke your goal into smaller steps. Let’s see how you did.
Which step did you work on this week?"

Pause for response.

Teacher: "Great. Tell me one thing that went well when you tried that step."

After student answers, follow up:
Teacher: "Nice work! Now, what was one thing that felt tricky or didn’t go as planned?"

If student struggles to answer, prompt options:
Teacher: "Maybe you ran out of time, or you forgot, or it felt hard to start? Which sounds right?"

4. Troubleshoot & Adjust Steps (15 minutes)

Teacher: "Those challenges are normal. Let’s think of a strategy to make it easier.
What could we change so the step feels more doable?"

Possible prompts:
• "Could we break it into even smaller pieces?"
• "Could we pick a different time of day?"
• "Is there something you need—like a reminder on your phone or a timer?"

Teacher: "Which idea sounds most helpful to you?"

Once student chooses, help them plan it:
Teacher: "Okay, so this week you’ll try [student’s chosen strategy].
Let’s write that as your new interim step."

Write on a whiteboard or planner exactly as the student states.

5. Set Next Interim Steps & Timeline (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Now, we have one concrete step for this week.
What day and time will you do it?"

Encourage specificity:
Teacher: "For example, ‘On Tuesday after lunch, I will spend 10 minutes reading my history notes.’
What works for you?"

Confirm and restate:
Teacher: "Perfect. This week’s step is: [student states step].
I’ll check back with you on [agreed day]."

6. Transition to Journaling (5 minutes)

Teacher: "You’ve done great planning today!
Next, let’s record your new step and how you’ll do it in your journal.
We’ll use the Future Steps Journal."

Teacher: "Open your journal to the section titled ‘This Week’s Plan.’
Write down your step exactly as we said, then draw a little clock or reminder symbol next to it."

Teacher: "When you finish writing, draw a star if you feel confident about doing this step."

7. Preview Goal-Setting Debrief & Close (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Fantastic work today!
Next time, we’ll talk about how this step went and plan the next one together.
We’ll use the Goal-Setting Debrief discussion guide."

Teacher: "Before we end, how are you feeling about your plan?"

Listen and encourage.

Teacher: "I’m proud of the effort you put in.
Remember, small steps add up to big progress. Have a great week, and I’ll see you on [agreed day]!"
