Activity

Healthy Food Choices Activity

This activity will help you actively engage in learning about nutrition by identifying and categorizing healthy food choices. Follow the steps below to participate and apply what you have learned about balanced diets.

Instructions for Students

  1. List of Foods:

Write down at least 10 different foods you encounter in your daily life. Try to include items from all the major food groups (fruits & vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy).

  2. Categorize the Foods:

Next to each food, write down the food group it belongs to. If a food item can belong to more than one group, explain why it might fit in multiple categories.

  3. Reflection Questions:

Answer the following questions in a few sentences each:

    • Why is it important to include a variety of food groups in your diet?
    • How do different food groups contribute to your overall health?

  4. Group Discussion:

Share your findings with a partner or small group. Discuss any surprises or interesting observations you made about the foods you listed. What similarities and differences did you notice in your lists?

  5. Teacher-Led Review:

Your teacher will lead a class discussion using your shared observations to review why balanced nutrition is important for a healthy body.

Follow-Up Points for the Teacher

  • Encourage students to think critically about food choices beyond taste—consider aspects like energy, growth, and recovery.
  • Use students' categorization as a chance to clarify any misconceptions about food groups.
  • Reinforce the lesson by linking student responses back to the key points on balanced nutrition.
  • Consider extending the activity by discussing local food availability and cultural food choices if time allows.

Enjoy the activity and remember: making informed food choices helps you
