Fueling Our Bodies

Students will be able to identify and categorize healthy and unhealthy items to consume, understanding the basic concept of making good choices for their bodies.

Teaching Pre-K students about healthy and unhealthy consumption habits is crucial for developing lifelong wellness. This lesson provides foundational knowledge to help them make safe and informed choices about what they eat and drink, fostering early self-care skills.

Step 1

Warm-Up: What Do We Eat?

5 minutes

Icebreaker: What Did You Eat Today?
- Begin by asking students what they ate for breakfast or a snack today.
- Use the Fueling Our Bodies Slide Deck (Slide 1) to introduce the topic.
- Explain that some foods help our bodies grow big and strong, while others don't.
- Encourage a few students to share, guiding them to identify if their shared food was 'good for their body' or 'sometimes food'.

Step 2

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Discussion

10 minutes

  • Display Slide 2 of the Fueling Our Bodies Slide Deck and discuss what 'healthy' means for our bodies (gives energy, helps us grow, keeps us from getting sick).
    - Display Slide 3 and discuss what 'unhealthy' means (can make us feel tired, tummy ache, not good for our teeth).
    - Use the Healthy vs. Unhealthy Sort Cards to visually sort examples of food and drinks into two categories: 'Healthy' and 'Unhealthy'. Ask students to help decide where each card goes and explain why.
    - Emphasize that 'unhealthy' foods are okay sometimes, but healthy foods are best most of the time.

Step 3

My Healthy Plate Activity

10 minutes

  • Hand out the My Healthy Plate Worksheet and crayons/markers.
    - Explain that students will draw or color healthy foods on their plate.
    - Circulate and provide assistance, encouraging students to name the healthy foods they are adding.
    - Display Slide 4 of the Fueling Our Bodies Slide Deck to provide examples and reinforce the concept.

Step 4

Cool-Down: Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

5 minutes

  • Show various food images on Slide 5 of the Fueling Our Bodies Slide Deck.
    - For each image, ask students to give a 'thumbs up' if it's generally healthy and a 'thumbs down' if it's generally unhealthy.
    - Briefly review the main idea: eating healthy helps our bodies stay strong and happy!
    - Collect the My Healthy Plate Worksheet to check for understanding.

What Fuels Our Bodies?

What did you eat today?
How did it make you feel?

Welcome students and get them ready to talk about food! Ask a few students what they ate for breakfast or a snack. Guide them to think about if it made them feel energetic or sleepy.

Healthy Choices Make Us Strong!

Healthy foods help us:
- Grow big and strong!
- Have lots of energy!
- Keep our bodies healthy!

Think: Fruits, Veggies, Water!

Introduce the concept of 'healthy' foods. Talk about why these foods are good for us (strong bones, lots of energy, helps us think). Give simple, relatable examples.

Sometimes Foods: Not Always the Best!

Unhealthy foods can make us:
- Feel tired or sleepy
- Have a tummy ache
- Not feel our best

Think: Lots of candy, too much soda

Now introduce 'unhealthy' foods. Explain that these are okay sometimes, but not all the time. Use simple terms to describe why they aren't always the best choice (tummy aches, not much energy).

Build Your Healthy Plate!

What healthy foods can you put on your plate?
- Colorful fruits
- Yummy vegetables
- Healthy proteins
- Water to drink!

This slide provides visual examples for the 'My Healthy Plate' activity. Encourage students to think about what they can draw or color on their own plates.

Healthy or Unhealthy? Thumbs Up or Down!

Let's review! Show me:
👍 for healthy!
👎 for unhealthy!

For the cool-down, quickly show images of various foods. Have students do a 'thumbs up' for healthy and 'thumbs down' for unhealthy. Reiterate the main message.
