Develop friendship skills

This series of lessons introduces 2nd graders to essential friendship skills through engaging videos and activities. Each session focuses on a different aspect of friendship: understanding and caring for others, resolving conflicts, and working together. These lessons are important as they help students build strong, positive relationships, fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.

Step 1

Session 1: Understanding Friendship

20 mins

  • Introduction (2 mins): Greet the students and introduce the topic of friendship.
  • Video Viewing (5 mins): Play the Respecting Each Other in School video. Encourage students to pay attention to how the characters show respect and kindness.
  • Discussion (5 mins): Use the Friendship Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about the video. Ask students to share examples of how they can show respect to their friends.
  • Craft Activity (6 mins): Provide students with craft supplies to create a friendship bracelet or card. Encourage them to think about a friend they appreciate and make something for them.
  • Closure (2 mins): Ask students to share their crafts and explain why they chose to make it for their friend.

Session 2: Empathy and Understanding

20 mins

  • Introduction (2 mins): Recap the previous session and introduce the concept of empathy.
  • Video Viewing (5 mins): Play the Story: A Little Respectful Spot video. Encourage students to notice how the characters show empathy and understanding.
  • Discussion (5 mins): Use the Friendship Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about empathy. Ask students to share times when they felt understood by a friend.
  • Role-Playing Activity (6 mins): Have students pair up and role-play scenarios where they practice showing empathy.
  • Closure (2 mins): Discuss how empathy helps build stronger friendships.

Session 3: Conflict Resolution and Teamwork

20 mins

  • Introduction (2 mins): Recap the previous sessions and introduce the topic of conflict resolution.
  • Video Viewing (5 mins): Play the Story: Our Class is a Family video. Encourage students to observe how the characters resolve conflicts and work together.
  • Discussion (5 mins): Use the Friendship Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about conflict resolution. Ask students to share strategies they use to solve disagreements with friends.
  • Teamwork Activity (6 mins): Organize a simple group activity where students must work together to achieve a common goal.
  • Closure (2 mins): Reflect on how teamwork and conflict resolution contribute to lasting friendships.
