Friendship Fix-Up!

Super Skills for Super Friends!

Welcome the boys and introduce the lesson with enthusiasm. Explain that today they will learn secret skills to make and keep great friends.

What Makes a Great Friend?

Think about your best friend or a really kind classmate.

What do they do that makes them a great friend?

What qualities do you like in a friend?

Start with an open-ended question to engage them and activate prior knowledge. Encourage both boys to share their ideas. Jot down a few key ideas if a whiteboard is available.

Positive Attention Power-Ups!

Do you like to be noticed?

It feels good to get attention, but how can we get it in ways that make everyone feel good?

  • Share your toys or ideas!
  • Offer to help a friend!
  • Ask to play or talk politely!
  • Give a high-five or a compliment!

Explain that getting attention is natural, but doing it in good ways helps everyone. Give simple examples and then ask them to brainstorm more. Emphasize positive actions like sharing, helping, or asking nicely. Role-play a quick scenario.

Friendship Formulas!

How do you make new friends? How do you keep the friends you have?

To Make Friends:

  • Smile and say hello!
  • Invite others to play!
  • Find things you both like!

To Be a Good Friend:

  • Listen when they talk!
  • Share and take turns!
  • Be kind with your words and actions!

Transition to making and being a good friend. Use clear, actionable steps. Discuss how listening is a big part of being a good friend. Ask for examples of each point.

Honesty Heroes!

What does it mean to be honest?

It means telling the truth, even when it's hard.

Why is being honest important?

  • People trust you!
  • You feel good inside!
  • It helps solve problems!

Introduce honesty. Define it simply and give a clear example. Discuss why it's important (trust, good feelings). Ask them about situations where being honest might be hard but is still the right thing to do.

Your Friendship Challenge!

Now it's your turn to be a Friendship Fix-Up Hero!

Pick one new skill to practice this week:

  • Positive Attention
  • Making/Being a Good Friend
  • Being Honest

Tell a grown-up how it went! You've got this!

Explain the challenge activity. Encourage them to pick one skill to focus on for the next few days. Reiterate that practicing makes perfect and these skills build strong, happy friendships.

Introduction: What Makes a Great Friend? (Slides 1-2)

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 1: Friendship Fix-Up!)

Teacher: "Welcome, awesome friends! Today, we're going on a super important adventure to become 'Friendship Fix-Up' heroes. We're going to learn some secret skills to make and keep our friendships strong and happy. Are you ready?"

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 2: What Makes a Great Friend?)

Teacher: "Let's start by thinking about what makes someone a great friend. When you think of a really kind classmate or your best friend, what do they do that makes them so special? What qualities do you really like in a friend?"

(Allow students to share their thoughts. Acknowledge and affirm their answers.)

Teacher: "Those are wonderful ideas! Being kind, sharing, playing together – these are all parts of being a great friend. Today, we'll learn even more ways to be super friends!"

Part 1: Positive Attention Power-Ups (Slide 3)

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 3: Positive Attention Power-Ups!)

Teacher: "Now, raise your hand if you like to be noticed sometimes. It feels good when people pay attention to you, right? But sometimes, we might try to get attention in ways that don't make everyone feel so good. Our first superpower is 'Positive Attention Power-Ups!'"

Teacher: "How can we get attention in ways that make others happy and want to be around us? The slide gives us some ideas: sharing our toys or ideas, offering to help a friend, asking to play politely, or even giving a high-five or a compliment!"

Teacher: "Let's try one! Who wants to role-play asking a friend to play nicely? Maybe you could say, 'Hey, [Friend's Name], that looks fun! Can I join you?' or 'Would you like to build with these blocks together?'"

(Guide students through a quick role-play. Provide positive feedback.)

Teacher: "Fantastic! When we get attention in positive ways, people are more likely to want to play and talk with us."

Part 2: Friendship Formulas (Slide 4)

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 4: Friendship Formulas!)

Teacher: "Our next superpower is 'Friendship Formulas.' These are like secret recipes for making new friends and being the best friend you can be to the friends you already have!"

Teacher: "To make new friends, you can simply smile and say hello! Or invite someone new to play something you like. And try to find things you both like to do!"

Teacher: "What about being a good friend to the friends you already have? The slide says to listen when they talk. That's so important! If your friend is telling you about their favorite game, really listen with your ears and your eyes. What else does it say?"

(Point to the slide points: Share and take turns, Be kind with your words and actions.)

Teacher: "Who can give me an example of sharing and taking turns? How about being kind with your words?"

(Allow students to share. Discuss briefly.)

Teacher: "These formulas help our friendships grow strong and happy!"

Part 3: Honesty Heroes (Slide 5)

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 5: Honesty Heroes!)

Teacher: "Our last superpower is being an 'Honesty Hero!' What do you think it means to be honest?"

(Wait for responses, guide them towards 'telling the truth'.)

Teacher: "That's right! Being honest means telling the truth, even when it feels a little tricky or you're worried about what might happen. It means saying what really happened, not making things up."

Teacher: "Why do you think being honest is so important for friendships and for feeling good ourselves? Look at the slide. It says: People trust you! When you're honest, your friends know they can believe what you say. It also says: You feel good inside! And it helps to solve problems!"

Teacher: "Can you think of a time when it might be hard to be honest, but it would still be the best thing to do?"

(Guide a short discussion with simple, age-appropriate examples, e.g., admitting you accidentally broke something, or telling a teacher what really happened during playtime.)

Teacher: "Being an Honesty Hero means you're building trust and showing that you're a really reliable friend."

Activity & Wrap-Up: Friendship Challenge (Slide 6)

(Teacher displays Friendship Fix-Up Slide Deck - Slide 6: Your Friendship Challenge!)

Teacher: "You've learned three amazing superpowers today: Positive Attention, Friendship Formulas, and being an Honesty Hero! Now it's time for your very own 'Friendship Challenge'!"

(Teacher distributes Friendship Challenge Activity)

Teacher: "On your 'Friendship Challenge' sheet, I want you to pick one of these new skills to practice this week. Just one! It could be trying to get attention in a positive way, or practicing listening to a friend, or maybe being extra honest about something."

Teacher: "Every day this week, try to use your chosen superpower. Then, tell a grown-up how it went. You can even draw a picture on your sheet of you using your superpower!"

Teacher: "Remember, practicing makes us better. You both have the power to be amazing friends and make every day a happy day. Keep up the great work, Friendship Fix-Up Heroes!"

(Collect the activity sheets or allow them to take them home to complete.)
