This lesson plan is designed for first graders in a small counseling group to help them develop self-control and learn how to make and keep friends. Over 8 sessions, students will engage in activities, discussions, and projects that promote social skills and emotional regulation. The use of Kelso's Wheel of Choices will provide a visual and interactive tool to help students understand and practice decision-making in social situations. This lesson is important as it equips young students with essential life skills that contribute to their overall well-being and success in school and beyond.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Welcome students and introduce the session's focus on self-control and friendship.

  • Use printable cards to play a game where students pick scenarios and decide which choice from Kelso's Wheel to use.
  • Encourage students to discuss their choices and reasoning.

  • Encourage students to share personal experiences and thoughts.

  • Read 'The Rainbow Fish' picture book.
  • Watch the Respecting Each Other in School video.
  • Discuss the themes of sharing and friendship from the book and video, asking students to reflect on how they relate to their own lives.
  • Craft Activity: Create a Rainbow Fish using paper plates and colored tissue paper. Encourage students to share their 'scales' with each other to complete their fish, reinforcing the story's message.
