Meet the Counselor

Students will meet the school counselor, learn her role as a helper and listener, and build initial trust through interactive games and songs that introduce sharing feelings and seeking support.

Introducing the counselor early helps Pre-K students feel safe, develop trust, and understand they have a caring adult to support their feelings and needs throughout the year.

Step 1

Welcome and Hello Song

5 minutes

  • Invite students to sit on the soft floor cushions in a circle.
  • Distribute name stickers and help each child place theirs.
  • Sing the Pre-K Hello Song Lyrics together, encouraging clapping and smiling.
  • Explain that today they have a special guest: the school counselor.

Step 2

Meet the Counselor

5 minutes

  • Introduce the counselor at the front of the circle.
  • Show the Counselor Introduction Poster and point out the counselor’s photo and name.
  • Counselor says hello and shares one fun fact (e.g., favorite book).
  • Explain, in simple terms, that the counselor is here to listen and help.

Step 3

Feelings Matching Game

10 minutes

  • Lay out the Pre-K Emotion Matching Cards face down.
  • Show the Pre-K Feelings Chart and briefly name each emotion.
  • Invite students one at a time to flip a card and match it to the chart.
  • Counselor and teacher praise correct matches and talk about times they’ve felt each emotion.

Step 4

Emotion Song

5 minutes

  • Lead students in a short song about feelings (use simple tune).
  • Incorporate motions: smiling for happy, frowning for sad, hands on heart for loved.
  • Encourage children to sing and act out each feeling.

Step 5

Reflection and Closing

5 minutes

  • Ask students to name one thing they learned about the counselor.
  • Remind children they can talk to the counselor anytime they feel happy, sad, or need help.
  • Sing the goodbye verse of the Pre-K Hello Song Lyrics as they leave circle time.

Display or point to the chart. Name each face: happy, sad, angry, surprised, calm. Encourage students to mimic the faces.

  1. Pick one card from the Pre-K Emotion Matching Cards
  2. Find the same feeling on our chart
  3. Show us and share a time you felt that way

Explain the game steps. Invite one child at a time to pick a card and match it. Offer praise: “Great job finding happy!”

Cut out these 10 cards—two of each feeling—to use in your Feelings Matching Game. Mix them up, lay them face-down, and take turns finding pairs. When a match is made, name the feeling and point to it on the Pre-K Feelings Chart.
