Slide Deck
CASEL Competency Overview
• What are CASEL competencies?
• Five key SEL skills research shows lead to academic and life success.
• We’ll define each, see examples, and discuss how to practice them.
Welcome students and introduce the session. Explain that social-emotional learning (SEL) is essential for success in high school and beyond. Today we’ll explore the five CASEL competencies and discuss real-world examples.
1. Self-Awareness
Definition: The ability to recognize one’s emotions, values, strengths, and limitations.
Example: Noticing you feel anxious before a test and knowing you study best in short bursts.
Discussion Prompt: When has understanding your feelings helped you make a better choice?
Emphasize that self-awareness is the foundation for all other competencies. Ask volunteers to share one personal strength.
2. Self-Management
Definition: The ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations.
Example: Using a planner to keep track of assignments instead of procrastinating.
Discussion Prompt: What strategies help you stay calm and focused under pressure?
Highlight strategies for managing emotions and behaviors. Invite students to share stress-reduction techniques they use.
3. Social Awareness
Definition: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others.
Example: Realizing a classmate is struggling with a new concept and offering help.
Discussion Prompt: Share a time you stepped into someone else’s shoes and what you learned.
Discuss how perspective-taking builds empathy. Ask students for examples of noticing others’ feelings in real life.
4. Relationship Skills
Definition: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships.
Example: Collaborating respectfully on a group project and resolving conflicts calmly.
Discussion Prompt: What makes communication effective when working in teams?
Explain that relationship skills require practice. Role-play a quick active-listening exercise if time allows.
5. Responsible Decision-Making
Definition: The ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions.
Example: Weighing pros and cons before choosing how to spend your free time.
Discussion Prompt: Describe a decision you made that you feel proud of and why.
Point out that decision-making involves evaluating consequences. Present a simple ethical dilemma for the class.
Bringing It All Together
• Self-Awareness builds the insight to manage yourself.
• Self-Management keeps you on track.
• Social Awareness and Relationship Skills power teamwork.
• Responsible Decision-Making guides ethical action.
Summarize how all five competencies connect. Reinforce that growth in one area supports the others.
Next Steps & Reflection
• Use the Student Reflection Journal Template to record examples.
• Pick one competency to focus on this week.
• Share your goal with a partner for accountability.
Encourage students to reflect in their journals and set a goal for practicing one competency this week.

Activity
Community Circle Guidelines
Purpose:
Community Circles are structured discussions that foster trust, inclusion, and belonging. They help students share experiences, practice active listening, and build a positive classroom culture.
Roles & Setup (5 mins)
- Circle Keeper: Facilitator (teacher or rotating student) who guides timing and keeps the group on task.
- Talking Piece: An object passed around; only the person holding it may speak. This ensures respectful turn-taking.
- Arrange chairs in a circle so all participants can see each other.
Circle Norms (Develop with Students)
- Respect: Listen without interrupting.
- Confidentiality: What’s shared in the circle stays in the circle.
- Authenticity: Speak from your own experience using “I” statements.
- Curiosity: Ask questions to understand, not judge.
- Support: Respond with empathy and encouragement.
Facilitator Steps
- Opening (2 mins): Brief breathing exercise or mindfulness prompt.
- Introduce Topic (1 min): Connect to current theme (e.g., goal setting, stress check-in, empathy).
- Pass the Talking Piece (10–12 mins): Each student shares a response to a prompt.
- Group Reflection (5 mins): Discuss common themes, surprises, or questions.
- Closing (2 mins): Summarize key takeaways and link to next steps or journal reflections.
Sample Prompts
- Self-Awareness: “What emotion did you notice most this week, and why?”
- Self-Management: “Share one strategy you used to handle a stressful moment.”
- Social Awareness: “Describe a time you noticed someone else’s feelings and how you responded.”
- Relationship Skills: “What makes someone a good listener in a group?”
- Responsible Decision-Making: “Tell us about a choice you made this week that you feel proud of.”
Follow-Up & Reflection
- After the circle, have students record insights in the Student Reflection Journal Template.
- Encourage them to set a personal SEL goal based on today’s discussion.
- Revisit circle norms regularly and adjust based on student feedback.
Tip for Teachers: Rotate circle roles (e.g., timekeeper, notetaker) so students develop leadership and ownership of the process.

Rubric
Semester Assessment Rubric
Use this rubric to evaluate students’ performance across SEL competencies, project quality, presentation skills, and reflection. Each criterion is scored on a 4-point scale (4 = Exemplary, 3 = Proficient, 2 = Developing, 1 = Beginning).
| Criteria | 4 – Exemplary | 3 – Proficient | 2 – Developing | 1 – Beginning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEL Competency Integration | Consistently demonstrates and articulates all five CASEL competencies. Connects self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making in work and interactions. | Applies most CASEL competencies effectively. Shows clear self-awareness and self-management; demonstrates empathy and sound decision-making in most situations. | Shows partial understanding of SEL skills. Inconsistently applies competencies; requires support to manage emotions or collaborate respectfully. | Rarely applies or recognizes CASEL competencies. Struggles to reflect on emotions, work with others, or make responsible choices. |
| Project Planning & Execution | Exceeds expectations: Thorough planning, logical milestones, high-quality work, creative application. Meets or surpasses all deadlines and guidelines with minimal guidance. | Meets expectations: Clear plan and timeline, complete milestones, solid-quality final product. Requires minor guidance to stay on track. | Approaches expectations: Plan is incomplete or loosely organized; some milestones missed or rushed; final product is basic and needs revision. | Does not meet expectations: Lacks coherent plan or timeline; milestones not addressed; product is incomplete or off-task. |
| Presentation & Communication | Engaging, well-structured presentation: clear visuals, confident delivery, strong audience engagement, accurate content, and appropriate use of SEL language. | Clear and organized presentation: good visuals, understandable delivery, some audience engagement, mostly accurate content. | Basic presentation: minimal visuals, halting delivery, limited engagement; some inaccuracies or gaps in content. | Unclear or unorganized: poor visuals or none, reads notes, audience disengaged; content is inaccurate or missing key elements. |
| Reflection & Growth Mindset | Insightful, thorough reflection: identifies strengths, challenges, and growth areas; sets ambitious, actionable SEL and project goals; demonstrates evidence of progress. | Thoughtful reflection: describes learning and areas for improvement; sets reasonable goals; shows some progress in SEL or project skills. | Superficial reflection: notes what happened but lacks depth; goals are vague; limited evidence of change or next-step planning. | Little or no reflection: minimal description of experience; no clear goals; no evidence of self-assessment or growth mindset. |
