Fresh Start, Best You!

What does it mean to be 'fresh'?
Why is being 'fresh' important?

Welcome students and introduce the topic of personal hygiene. Ask them what 'hygiene' means to them before revealing the definition. This ties into the 'Hygiene Hook Warm Up'.

What is Personal Hygiene?

It's how we keep our bodies clean and healthy!

Why does it matter?

  • Stay healthy and strong
  • Feel confident and good about yourself
  • Be comfortable around friends and family

Explain that personal hygiene is how we take care of our bodies to stay clean and healthy. Emphasize that it's about feeling good and being ready for anything.

Hygiene Habits: Handwashing Heroes

When should we wash our hands?

  • Before eating
  • After using the restroom
  • After playing outside
  • After coughing or sneezing

How to be a Handwashing Hero:

  • Wet hands with clean water
  • Use soap and scrub for 20 seconds (sing 'Happy Birthday' twice!)
  • Rinse well
  • Dry with a clean towel

Focus on the most common and important hygiene practice. Ask students when they think handwashing is most important. Briefly demonstrate proper handwashing technique if time permits.

Hygiene Habits: Shower Power!

Why shower or bathe regularly?

  • Removes dirt and sweat
  • Helps you smell fresh
  • Keeps your skin healthy

How often?

  • Most days, especially after sweating or playing sports!

Discuss daily washing and why it's important as we grow. Keep it age-appropriate and positive, focusing on feeling clean and refreshed.

Hygiene Habits: Toothbrush Team!

Why brush and floss?

  • Removes food and plaque
  • Prevents cavities
  • Keeps your breath fresh
  • Helps your teeth stay strong

How often?

  • Brush twice a day for 2 minutes
  • Floss daily

Highlight the importance of oral hygiene for overall health. Ask about common issues if teeth aren't brushed (cavities, bad breath).

Hygiene Habits: Fresh Clothes, Fresh You!

Why wear clean clothes?

  • Removes sweat and odors
  • Makes you feel good

Tip: Change clothes, especially socks and underwear, daily!

Briefly touch on body odor and how clean clothes help. Explain that as bodies change, these habits become even more important.

Become a Hygiene Hero!

Now, let's put our knowledge to the test!

In groups, you will get different scenarios. Your mission: decide what hygiene habits are needed for each situation.

Be ready to share your heroic hygiene plan!

Transition to the group activity. Explain that students will apply what they've learned to real-life scenarios. Introduce the 'Hygiene Heroes Activity'.

Your Fresh Start, Your Best You!

Remember, taking care of your body is a superpower!

Good hygiene helps you:

  • Stay healthy
  • Feel confident
  • Be a great friend and classmate

What's one habit you'll focus on this week?

Conclude the lesson by reinforcing the main message: good hygiene helps you feel your best and be your best. Introduce the 'Hygiene Habits Checklist Cool Down' as a final reflection.

Hygiene Habits Script

Warm-Up: Hygiene Hook (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today we're going to talk about something super important for all of us, especially as you're getting older and growing into amazing young adults. We're going to talk about staying fresh and feeling your best!"

"To get us started, I want you to think about this question: What does it mean to be 'fresh'? You can think about how a room can be fresh, or how food can be fresh, but also think about how you can be fresh. Take a moment to think silently."

Teacher: "Now, turn to a partner or your small group and briefly share your ideas. What does it mean to be 'fresh' and why do you think it's important for us as individuals?" (Allow 2-3 minutes for discussion.)

Teacher: "Can a few groups share some of their ideas? What did you discuss about being 'fresh'?"

(Listen to student responses, guiding them toward ideas of cleanliness, feeling good, smelling good, etc.)

Introduction to Personal Hygiene (8 minutes)

Teacher: "Great ideas, everyone! When we talk about staying fresh and taking care of our bodies, we're really talking about something called personal hygiene. Can anyone tell me what they think personal hygiene might be?"

Teacher: "Excellent! Let's look at our slides to learn more." (Display Fresh Start, Best You! Slide Deck - Slide 2: What is Personal Hygiene?)

Teacher: "Personal hygiene is simply how we keep our bodies clean and healthy. It's all about the habits we have to take care of ourselves."

Teacher: "Why do you think it matters? Look at the slide. Staying healthy and strong is a big one. How does good hygiene help us stay healthy?"

Teacher: "Right! Washing away germs, preventing sickness. It also helps us feel confident and good about ourselves. When you feel clean and fresh, how does that make you feel inside?"

Teacher: "Exactly! And finally, it helps us be comfortable around friends and family. No one wants to sit next to someone who smells, right? It makes social interactions more pleasant for everyone."

(Transition to Slide 3: Handwashing Heroes)

Teacher: "One of the most important hygiene habits is handwashing. When do you think are the most important times to wash our hands?" (Allow responses.)

Teacher: "The slide shows some key times: before eating, after using the restroom, after playing, after coughing or sneezing. And remember, we want to be a Handwashing Hero by using soap and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds! That's like singing 'Happy Birthday' twice!"

(Transition to Slide 4: Shower Power!)

Teacher: "Another important habit, especially as you get older, is showering or bathing regularly. Why do you think this is important?"

Teacher: "It washes away dirt and sweat, helps us smell fresh, and keeps our skin healthy. How often do you think we should aim to shower or bathe?"

Teacher: "Most days, especially if you've been active!"

(Transition to Slide 5: Toothbrush Team!)

Teacher: "Our teeth are super important too! Why do we brush and floss?"

Teacher: "To get rid of food and plaque, prevent cavities, keep our breath fresh, and keep our teeth strong. How often should we brush?"

Teacher: "Twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss daily if you can!"

(Transition to Slide 6: Fresh Clothes, Fresh You!)

Teacher: "Lastly, let's talk about clothes. Why is wearing clean clothes important?"

Teacher: "Clean clothes help remove sweat and odors, and just make you feel better. Remember to change clothes, especially socks and underwear, daily!"

Game: Hygiene Bingo! (12 minutes)

(Transition to Slide 7: Become a Hygiene Hero! - Note: The slide title says 'Become a Hygiene Hero!' but now refers to the Bingo game.)

Teacher: "Now that we've talked about these important habits, it's time for a fun game to help us remember them even better! We're going to play Hygiene Bingo!"

Teacher: "I'm going to give each of you a Hygiene Bingo! Game Card. Your card has different hygiene actions or items on it. I will call out these actions, and if you have that item on your card, you'll mark it off. The first person to get five marked squares in a row – across, down, or diagonally – should shout 'BINGO!' and then I'll check your card."

"Listen carefully as I call out the items. Let's see who can get 'BINGO!' first!"

(Distribute Hygiene Bingo! Game Cards. Begin calling out items from the suggested list in the Hygiene Bingo! material. Circulate and assist students, and verify Bingos as they happen.)

Cool-Down: Hygiene Habits Checklist (5 minutes)

(Transition to Slide 8: Your Fresh Start, Your Best You!)

Teacher: "Fantastic work today, everyone! Remember, taking care of your body with good hygiene is like having a superpower! It helps you stay healthy, feel confident, and be a great friend and classmate."

Teacher: "Before we finish up, I want you to complete this quick Hygiene Habits Checklist Cool Down. On it, I want you to think about everything we discussed today and choose one hygiene habit that you will focus on improving or making sure you do consistently this week."

(Distribute the cool-down checklist. Give students 2-3 minutes to complete it.)

Teacher: "When you're finished, please turn in your checklist as you leave. Thank you all for being such engaged and thoughtful Hygiene Heroes today! I hope you all have a fresh and fantastic rest of your day!"
