Fresh & Polite Lesson Plan

By the end of this 30-minute lesson, 8th graders will identify and practice key personal hygiene habits and social manners, and commit to one actionable self-care and one etiquette improvement.

Good hygiene and polite behavior promote health, confidence, and positive relationships. Teaching these skills helps students feel respected, build self-esteem, and foster a respectful classroom culture.

  • Ask students to share their own routines and tips.
  • Highlight how hygiene affects health and confidence.

  • Distribute Social Manners Scenario Cards in pairs.
  • Students read scenarios and role-play appropriate polite responses.
  • Encourage use of greetings, please/thank you, personal space.

Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Say: “Today we’ll learn how good hygiene and polite behavior help us feel confident and respected.”

Why Hygiene & Manners Matter

  • Builds self-confidence

Ask students: “Why do hygiene and manners matter?” Invite a few responses. Emphasize health, confidence, and relationships.

Daily Hygiene Routines

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Shower or bathe regularly
  • Wash hands before eating and after restroom
  • Use deodorant under arms

Interactive: Share one tip you use.

Review each routine. Call on volunteers to share a personal tip.

Proper Handwashing

  1. Wet hands with clean water
  2. Apply enough soap
  3. Scrub all surfaces for 20 seconds
  4. Rinse thoroughly
  5. Dry with a clean towel

Pair up and practice.

Demonstrate each step while students follow along. Use a timer for 20-second scrub.

Manners Basics

  • Greetings: “Hello,” “Good morning”
  • Polite words: “Please,” “Thank you”
  • Respect personal space

Question: What other polite phrases do you use?

Define each point and ask for examples from students’ daily life.

Role-Play Activity

  1. In pairs, pick a Scenario Card
  2. Role-play both parts using 3+ polite phrases
  3. Swap roles after first round

Explain role-play expectations. Distribute scenario cards. Circulate to support and prompt polite language.

Reflection & Action Plan

Hand out the Personal Hygiene Checklist Handout. Guide students to pick and write.

Social Manners Scenario Cards

Distribute these cards in pairs. Each pair reads their scenario, chooses who is Role A and Role B, and practices using 3+ polite phrases (greetings, please/thank you, personal space). Swap roles after the first round.


Card 1
Scenario: You see the substitute teacher arriving at the classroom door. Greet them politely and offer to help set up.
Roles: Student, Substitute Teacher
Prompt: Use a friendly greeting and ask a respectful question.





Card 2
Scenario: You need to borrow a pen during class, but your neighbor didn’t hear you ask. Politely get their attention and make your request.
Roles: Student A (borrower), Student B (owner)
Prompt: Use “excuse me,” “please,” and “thank you.”





Card 3
Scenario: You accidentally bump into a classmate in the hallway. Apologize and check if they’re okay.
Roles: Bumper, Bumped Into
Prompt: Use a sincere apology and ask if they need help.





Card 4
Scenario: You want to invite a classmate to join your study group after school. Make the invitation politely.
Roles: Inviter, Invitee
Prompt: Use “would you like,” “please,” and express appreciation.






Card 5
Scenario: A friend holds the door open for you as you enter the school building. Respond appropriately.
Roles: Door Holder, Receiver
Prompt: Use “thank you” and a friendly comment.





Card 6
Scenario: You receive an invitation to a weekend event but you can’t attend. Politely decline and thank them.
Roles: Inviter, Decliner
Prompt: Use an apology, a brief explanation, and “thank you for inviting me.”







Card 7
Scenario: The cafeteria staff serves your lunch. Thank them and return their friendly smile.
Roles: Student, Cafeteria Staff
Prompt: Use “thank you,” “have a great day,” and a smile.

Scenario: You’re in a group conversation and need to leave for another class. Politely excuse yourself.
