(e.g., washing hands, brushing teeth, clean clothes, nail care)

Set up a chart paper or whiteboard. Invite rapid responses. Encourage every student to contribute.

Hygiene Essential: Handwashing

Review these steps from the Handwashing Steps Poster:

  1. Wet hands, apply soap
  2. Scrub all surfaces (20 seconds)
  3. Rinse and dry

Partner will time you!

  2. Toothbrushing Station (use toothbrush & mirror/tooth model)
  3. Reflection Station (jot down a new habit)

Divide class into groups of 3–4. Explain rotation timing and roles.

Reflection Station

Write one new hygiene habit you’ll adopt this week on a sticky note. Place it on our classroom board under “My Clean Habit.”

Reading

Handwashing Steps Poster

Follow these five simple steps to keep your hands clean and germ-free!

1. Wet Your Hands

Stand under clean, running water (warm or cold) and wet your entire hand surface.

2. Apply Soap

Squeeze a dime-sized amount of soap onto your palm. Make sure you have enough to cover all surfaces.

3. Lather & Scrub (20 Seconds)

Rub your hands together vigorously, covering all parts of your hands:

  • Palms
  • Backs of hands
  • Between fingers
  • Under and around nails
  • Thumbs

Hum “Happy Birthday” twice to time your 20 seconds!

4. Rinse Thoroughly

Place your hands under running water and rinse away all the soap and suds.

5. Dry Your Hands

Use a clean towel or air dryer to dry your hands completely. If possible, use the towel to turn off the faucet when you’re done.

Why Does Handwashing Matter?
Clean hands remove germs that can make you and others sick. Washing regularly:

  • Prevents colds, flu, and other infections
  • Keeps you healthy at school and home
  • Shows you care about yourself and others

Use these steps every time you:

  • Come in from outside
  • Before eating or preparing food
  • After using the restroom
  • After coughing or sneezing into your hands
