Students will identify and practice key personal hygiene habits—handwashing, oral care, and overall cleanliness—through interactive activities, discussion, and reflection to promote health, confidence, and social well-being.
Teaching personal hygiene equips students with essential skills to maintain health, prevent illness, and build self-confidence. Understanding and practicing these habits fosters lifelong well-being and positive social interactions.

Prep
Prepare Materials and Stations
15 minutes
- Review and print the Handwashing Steps Poster.
- Print enough copies of the Personal Hygiene Quiz Worksheet for each student.
- Gather chart paper, markers, soap, water access, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and a timer.
- Set up two stations: a handwashing sink area and a brushing teeth area.
- Arrange desks or tables for the worksheet and group discussion.

Warm-Up Brainstorm
5 minutes
- Display chart paper and markers at the front of the room.
- Ask students to call out personal hygiene habits they know (e.g., washing hands, brushing teeth).
- Write each habit on the chart without judgment.
- Prompt for less obvious habits (e.g., nail care, clean clothes).
Step 2
Direct Instruction: Hygiene Essentials

- Show the Handwashing Steps Poster and review each step of proper handwashing.
- Demonstrate the handwashing technique at the sink station.
- Explain other key hygiene practices: brushing teeth twice daily, showering, wearing clean clothes, and nail care.
- Invite questions and clarify common misconceptions.

Class Discussion: Why It Matters

- Ask students why they think good hygiene is important for health and confidence.
- Record their responses on the same chart paper.
- Highlight benefits: preventing illness, feeling good, positive social interactions.

Hygiene Stations Activity
15 minutes
- Divide students into small groups of 3–4.
- Explain station rotations: handwashing station, toothbrushing station, and reflection/notes station.
- At the handwashing station, each student practices washing hands for at least 20 seconds, using soap and water; a partner times with the timer.
- At the brushing station, students practice brushing on provided toothbrushes and toothpaste on a tooth model or mirror.
- At the reflection station, students jot down one new habit they will adopt on a sticky note.
- Rotate every 5 minutes until each group visits all stations.

7 minutes
- Distribute the Personal Hygiene Quiz Worksheet to each student.
- Instruct students to complete questions individually, answering multiple-choice and short-response items about hygiene steps and benefits.
- Circulate to assist and ensure understanding.

Review these steps from the Handwashing Steps Poster:
- Wet hands, apply soap

Hygiene Stations Activity
Rotate through three stations (5 minutes each):
- Handwashing Station (practice steps, partner times)
- Toothbrushing Station (use toothbrush & mirror/tooth model)
- Reflection Station (jot down a new habit)
Divide class into groups of 3–4. Explain rotation timing and roles.
Reflection Station
Write one new hygiene habit you’ll adopt this week on a sticky note. Place it on our classroom board under “My Clean Habit.”
Provide sticky notes and pens. Remind students to be specific about their habit.

Handwashing Steps Poster
Follow these five simple steps to keep your hands clean and germ-free!
1. Wet Your Hands
Stand under clean, running water (warm or cold) and wet your entire hand surface.
2. Apply Soap
Squeeze a dime-sized amount of soap onto your palm. Make sure you have enough to cover all surfaces.
3. Lather & Scrub (20 Seconds)
Rub your hands together vigorously, covering all parts of your hands:
- Palms
- Backs of hands
- Between fingers
- Under and around nails
- Thumbs
Hum “Happy Birthday” twice to time your 20 seconds!
4. Rinse Thoroughly
Place your hands under running water and rinse away all the soap and suds.
5. Dry Your Hands
Use a clean towel or air dryer to dry your hands completely. If possible, use the towel to turn off the faucet when you’re done.
Why Does Handwashing Matter?
Clean hands remove germs that can make you and others sick. Washing regularly:
- Prevents colds, flu, and other infections
- Keeps you healthy at school and home
- Shows you care about yourself and others
Use these steps every time you:
- Come in from outside
- Before eating or preparing food
- After using the restroom
- After coughing or sneezing into your hands
