Lesson Plan

Fresh and Clean Support Plan

By the end of this 20-minute session, the student will independently complete a basic hair-washing routine (wet, lather, rinse, dry) with no more than one prompt and record success on the sticker chart.

Establishing consistent personal care routines supports health, independence, and self-esteem. Visual guides and positive reinforcement help the student internalize steps and reduce reliance on adult prompts.

Visual Hair & Bath Guide

Follow these 4 easy steps to wash your hair!

Welcome the student and introduce the guide. Explain that they will see four simple steps to wash their hair by themselves.

Step 1: Wet Your Hair

💧 Place your head under warm water until all your hair is wet.

Show how to check water temperature and help them lean back under the water. Encourage them to get all their hair wet.

Step 2: Lather Shampoo

🧴 Squeeze a small amount of shampoo and rub into your hair to make lots of bubbles.

Demonstrate how much shampoo to use (about a quarter-sized amount). Guide them to massage bubbles into their scalp.

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

🚿 Use water to wash out every bit of shampoo until no bubbles remain.

Remind them to look for any remaining bubbles and rinse until the water runs clear.

Step 4: Dry Your Hair

🧼 Wrap your hair in a towel and gently pat it until it’s not dripping.

Show them how to wrap hair in a towel and gently pat dry—not rub hair roughly.

You’re All Done!

👏 Great job washing your hair! Remember these steps every time you take a bath.

Praise the student for completing all steps. Encourage them to follow this guide each time for clean hair!

Script

Gentle Reminder Script

This script provides gentle, step-by-step prompts and praise phrases for each personal care task. Use these cues to guide the student through each step and reinforce their success.

1. Brush Your Hair

Teacher says:
“Okay, let’s brush your hair! First, use your fingers to divide your hair into sections. Then pick up your brush and gently start at the roots, brushing down toward the ends.”

If the student gets stuck or rushes:
“Let’s slow it down and start again at the roots. Nice and gentle strokes.”

Praise after success:
“Great job! Your hair is looking smooth and tangle-free!”

2. Wash Your Hands

Teacher says:
“Now we’ll wash our hands. Turn on the faucet, wet your hands with warm water, and get your soap ready.”

If the student forgets soap or time:
“Remember to pump the soap once. Let’s count out loud to 20 while we rub our hands together.”

Praise after success:
“Fantastic! Your hands are all clean and fresh.”

3. Wash Your Face

Teacher says:
“Next, splash some warm water on your face. Put just a little cleanser on your fingertips, and gently massage in circles—avoiding your eyes.”

If the student rubs too hard or gets soap in eyes:
“Remember gentle circles and keep the soap away from your eyes. Let’s try again softly.”

Praise after success:
“Wonderful! Your skin feels nice and clean.”

4. Brush Your Teeth

Teacher says:
“Finally, let’s brush our teeth. Squeeze a pea-size amount of toothpaste on your brush, and let’s start brushing in gentle circles on all your teeth.”

If the student misses spots or rushes:
“Make sure to brush the front, back, and top of each tooth. Keep going until our two-minute timer is up.”

Praise after success:
“Great work! Your teeth are sparkling clean.”

Use this script to guide the student through each personal care routine. Offer gentle reminders when needed and celebrate each step they complete!
