Lesson Plan

Fraction Match-Up!

Students will be able to identify and match equivalent fractions.

Understanding equivalent fractions is a fundamental skill that helps students grasp more complex fraction operations and real-world applications, such as dividing pizzas fairly or understanding recipes.

Audience

5th Grade Students

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Through a hands-on card-matching game.

Materials

Prep

Prepare Game Cards

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Greet students and introduce the day's activity: "Fraction Match-Up!"
    - Explain that today they will play a game to practice finding fractions that are equal, even if they look different. Display Fraction Match-Up Slide Deck Slide 1.

Step 2

Review Equivalent Fractions (3 minutes)

3 minutes

  • Briefly review what equivalent fractions are. Use Fraction Match-Up Slide Deck Slide 2.
    - Ask for a few examples from students or provide one: "What's an equivalent fraction to 1/2?" (e.g., 2/4, 3/6).

Step 3

Introduce the Game (3 minutes)

3 minutes

Step 4

Play the Game (6 minutes)

6 minutes

  • Instruct groups to shuffle the cards and spread them face down. Students take turns flipping two cards to find a match. If they find an equivalent fraction pair, they keep the cards. If not, they flip them back over.
    - Circulate among groups, observing play, providing support, and answering questions. Encourage students to explain their reasoning when making matches.
    - Remind them that the goal is to find as many equivalent fraction pairs as possible.

Step 5

Wrap-up (1 minute)

1 minute

  • Call time and have students count their matched pairs.
    - Briefly discuss any challenging pairs or interesting strategies used.
    - Congratulate them on their hard work and progress in understanding equivalent fractions.

Slide Deck

Fraction Match-Up!

Let's find some equivalent fractions!

Welcome students and introduce the game. Emphasize that they will be working in groups to find fractions that are the same value.

What are Equivalent Fractions?

  • Fractions that represent the same value.
  • They look different, but they are equal!
  • Example: 1/2 is the same as 2/4.

Quickly review what equivalent fractions are. Ask students for examples or guide them to understand that different fractions can represent the same part of a whole.

How to Play!

  1. Get into your groups.
  2. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a grid.
  3. Take turns flipping over two cards.
  4. If the fractions are EQUIVALENT, keep the pair!
  5. If they are NOT equivalent, flip them back over.
  6. The player with the most pairs at the end wins!

Explain the game rules clearly. Go over each step to ensure students understand before they begin playing.

Let's See an Example!

If you flip over...

1/3

and

2/6

...You found a match! Keep them!

Provide a quick visual example of what a match looks like. This helps solidify understanding before they start.

Fraction Match-Up Game Cards

Instructions for Teacher: Print these cards, preferably on cardstock, and cut them out. Each set should be shuffled and placed face down for students to play a matching game. Create one set per group of 3-4 students.

(Self-correction: I have a duplicate 1/3 and 2/6 from Card Set 1, and 3/9 = 1/3. I will modify Card Set 6 to remove the duplicates and ensure new equivalent pairs.)
