Lesson Plan

Fraction Fun Fiesta Lesson Plan

Students will understand and identify halves and quarters by partitioning shapes and sets through guided instruction and hands-on activities.

Understanding basic fractions lays the groundwork for future math success and real-world problem solving. This lesson helps Grade 3 students visualize and apply halves and quarters in engaging, tangible ways.

Audience

Grade 3 Students

Time

45 minutes

Approach

Hands-on shape partitioning and guided practice

Materials

Paper Circles and Squares, Scissors, Colored Pencils or Markers, Fraction Circle Manipulatives, Partition the Shapes Worksheet, and Fraction Identification Cards

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Print sufficient copies of Partition the Shapes Worksheet for each student.
  • Print and cut out Fraction Identification Cards.
  • Gather paper circles, squares, scissors, colored pencils, and fraction circle manipulatives near student workstations.
  • Review the lesson’s objective and materials to ensure smooth transitions.

Step 1

Introduction to Fractions

5 minutes

  • Show a whole paper circle and ask: “What is one whole?”
  • Fold the circle in half and explain each part is a half (1/2).
  • Fold another circle into quarters and highlight each quarter (1/4).
  • Use Fraction Identification Cards to prompt students to name the fraction shown.

Step 2

Guided Partitioning

10 minutes

  • Distribute paper shapes and colored pencils.
  • Demonstrate on the board how to draw a line to create halves on a square.
  • Students practice partitioning one circle into halves and one into quarters on their paper shapes.
  • Walk around to check for accuracy and correct misconceptions.

Step 3

Hands-On Manipulatives

15 minutes

  • In pairs, students use fraction circle manipulatives to build wholes, halves, and quarters.
  • Assign each pair cards from Fraction Identification Cards and have them model the fraction physically.
  • Pairs swap cards and repeat until all cards are used.
  • Encourage students to verbalize: “This is 1/2” or “This is 3/4.”

Step 4

Independent Practice & Assessment

15 minutes

  • Students complete the remaining problems on Partition the Shapes Worksheet, shading halves and quarters.
  • Collect worksheets for formative assessment.
  • Quick exit question: On a mini whiteboard, draw a shape divided into 4 parts and shade one quarter.
