Focus Superheroes

Welcome, 2nd graders!
Today we’ll become superheroes who can plan, focus, and organize our tasks like pros.

Welcome students to our exciting Focus Superheroes lesson. Introduce yourself as their guide. Use an enthusiastic tone to get them excited about discovering their inner superheroes.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Plan a simple task step by step
  • Stay focused on an activity until it’s complete
  • Organize your materials neatly

Read each objective aloud and ask students to raise their hand if they’ve ever needed to do that at school or at home. Make it interactive.

Materials

To complete your superhero missions, you’ll need:

Show real examples of the materials or a visual slide if available. Hold up a timer and colored pencils to build excitement.

Meet the Focus Superheroes

Our superpowers are:

  • Planning Power: Figuring out what steps come first and next
  • Focus Power: Staying on task until you hear the timer buzz
  • Organization Power: Putting things in order so you can find them easily

Explain that every superhero has special powers. Today, our powers are planning, focusing, and organizing. Ask students for real-life examples, like packing a backpack.

Mission 1: Planning with the Worksheet

  1. Get your Superhero Planning Worksheet.
  2. Write your mission (task) name.
  3. List the steps you’ll take.
  4. Estimate how long each step will take.
  5. Share one example with the class.

Model filling out the Superhero Planning Worksheet on the board or document camera. Complete a sample: “Put away art supplies,” breaking it into 3 steps. Then let students choose their own quick task.

Mission 2: Focus Action Drill

  1. Work in pairs or small groups.
  2. Draw a card from the Focus Mission Cards.
  3. Set the timer for 2 minutes.
  4. Complete the task (e.g., color a shape, trace letters) without stopping.
  5. When the timer rings, switch cards and repeat.

Hand out the Focus Mission Cards and timers. Emphasize that the timer won’t stop early—true superheroes finish their mission! Circulate to encourage students to keep going until the timer rings.

Mission 3: Organize-It HQ

  1. Grab a small pile of classroom items.
  2. Use the Organize-It Checklist to sort and arrange your items.
  3. Check off each step as you go.
  4. Neat and tidy is the goal!

Show a mixed pile of classroom items. Demonstrate checking off each step on the Organize-It Checklist. Encourage students to keep their eyes on the checklist so they don’t forget any steps.

Wrap-Up & Reflection

Think-Pair-Share: Which superhero power will you use today?

  • Planning Power
  • Focus Power
  • Organization Power

Remember to use your new skills during class and at home!

Ask several students to share which superhero power they enjoyed most. Remind them that they can use these powers during regular class work and at home. Collect materials quietly.
