Slide Deck

Finish Strong!

Setting End-of-Year Goals Together!

Welcome, friends! Today we’re going to talk about finishing the year on a high note. We’ll set personal Finish Strong goals and create a class poster to help us remember and support one another.

Lesson Objectives

• Reflect on our year’s successes
• Set a personal Finish Strong goal
• Share our goals with classmates
• Display all goals on our class poster

Read the slide aloud. Explain that we’ll reflect on what we’ve accomplished, choose a goal, share with classmates, and make a colorful poster.

What Does “Finish Strong” Mean?

• Think-pair-share: What have you done well this year?
• What is one thing to do before the year ends?

Ask: “What does it mean to finish strong?” Record student responses on chart paper. Encourage examples like kindness, reading, or completing work.

Reflection Time

  1. Take a moment to think: What do you want to do or get better at?
  2. Examples: read more books, be extra kind, finish work on time.

Distribute crayons. Ask students to close their eyes and think of one thing they’d like to improve or try before summer.

Set Your Goal

  1. On your goal sheet, draw a picture of your Finish Strong goal.
  2. Write one sentence about it. Ask for help if you need it.

Hand out each student a Finish Strong Goal Sheet. Read directions together. Encourage drawing and a simple sentence.

Share with a Partner

• Pair up and take turns sharing your goal.
• What will you do each day to reach it?
• Volunteers share one goal with the class.

Have students pair up to share their drawings and sentences. Listen in and prompt details as needed. Then invite 2–3 volunteers to share with the whole class.

Create the Class Poster

  1. Bring your goal sheet forward.
  2. Use tape or glue to add it to our class poster.
  3. Step back and admire our work!

Show the Class Finish Strong Poster. Invite students one by one to tape or glue their sheets onto the poster. Arrange them neatly.

Let’s Finish Strong!

Keep working toward your goal every day. Support each other and end the year on a high note!

Congratulate students on setting meaningful goals. Remind them to look at the poster each day and encourage classmates.

Project Guide

Class Finish Strong Poster

This project guides you through creating a vibrant, collaborative display of student Finish Strong goals.

Purpose

  • Celebrate and showcase each student’s end-of-year goal
  • Foster classroom unity and mutual encouragement
  • Provide a daily visual reminder to work toward our goals

Materials

  • Large chart paper or butcher paper (poster size)
  • Markers (various colors)
  • Tape or glue sticks
  • Student Finish Strong Goal Sheet pages
  • Decorative accents (stickers, borders, construction paper)

Prep (10 minutes)

  1. Lay out the chart paper on a table or attach it to a bulletin board/wall space at student height.
  2. Write the title “Finish Strong Goals” at the top in large, bold letters.
  3. Draw simple borders or add color blocks to make it inviting.
  4. Place markers, tape/glue, and decorative accents nearby.
  5. Ensure each student’s completed Finish Strong Goal Sheet is ready for mounting.

Assembly Steps (5–10 minutes)

  1. Invite students to come forward one at a time (or in small groups).
  2. Show them how to apply tape or glue to the back of their goal sheet.
  3. Have each student choose a spot on the poster and press their sheet firmly in place.
  4. Encourage students to space out their sheets evenly and add small decorative stickers or drawings around their own sheet if desired.
  5. As students work, prompt them to say the title of their goal aloud so classmates hear each other’s aspirations.

Display & Ongoing Use

  • Place the poster where students pass by daily (near the door, by the reading nook, or above cubbies).
  • Briefly revisit the poster each morning: ask a student volunteer to read one or two goals.
  • Encourage classmates to notice and praise each other’s efforts as they see a peer working toward their goal.
  • At the end of each week, celebrate progress by highlighting a few goals and asking students how they took steps toward them.

Tips

  • Laminate the poster if you plan to reuse it or add more goals.
  • Allow space at the bottom for “celebration stars” where students can add a star sticker when they make progress.
  • Take a photo of the finished poster to share with families or include in an end-of-year slideshow.

Script

Finish Strong! Teacher Script

Introduction (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Good morning, friends! Come join me on our meeting rug. Today we are going to talk about how to finish this school year strong—doing our very best all the way to the end!

Teacher: “First, I have a question for you: What does it mean to finish strong?
• Turn to your neighbor and whisper your idea for just 30 seconds.
• Ready? Go!”

Pause while students turn and talk.

Teacher: “Thank you! Let’s share some ideas. Who can tell me one thing they said? …”

Record responses on chart paper, e.g., “keep trying,” “be kind,” “finish my work.”

Teacher: “Great thinking! Finishing strong means keeping our effort up, being our best friends, and completing our work—all the way until the last day of school. Today, each of you will choose one special thing to work on before summer, and we’ll add it to our class poster!”

Reflection (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Now, let’s get our crayons. I want you to close your eyes for a moment and think: What is one thing you want to do or get better at before school ends? Maybe it’s reading more books, being extra kind, or finishing assignments on time.”

Give students about 10 seconds to think.

Teacher: “Okay, open your eyes! Hold your thought in your head. We’ll use that idea in just a minute.”

Goal Setting (10 minutes)

Teacher: “I am handing out a Finish Strong Goal Sheet now. Look at your sheet. We are going to do two things:

  1. Draw a picture of your Finish Strong goal in the top box.
  2. Write one sentence about your goal in the bottom box.

Let’s read the directions together: ‘Draw the goal you want to accomplish and write one sentence that tells all about it. Start with a capital letter and end with a period.’”

Teacher: “If you need help spelling words or forming letters, just raise your hand and I will come over. I can help you choose words, too!”

Circulate the room as students draw and write. Offer prompts: “Tell me about your picture,” “What word comes next?”

Sharing (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Time to share! Turn and face your partner. Take turns showing your drawing and reading your sentence. Remember to listen quietly and give a thumbs-up when your friend is done. You can ask one question like, ‘Why did you pick that goal?’”

After 2 minutes of sharing:

Teacher: “Let’s come back together. Who would like to share their goal with the whole class? Raise your hand!”

Invite 2–3 volunteers.

Teacher: “Thank you for sharing. I love hearing your goals!”

Create the Class Poster (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Now it’s time to make our Class Finish Strong Poster even more colorful. When I call your name, bring your goal sheet to our poster Class Finish Strong Poster. Use a piece of tape or a glue stick to stick it on. Choose a spot with space all around—so every goal shines!”

Call students one by one.

Teacher: “Look at all these wonderful goals! Our poster is going to remind us every day to keep going strong.”

Closing (Remaining Time)

Teacher: “Friends, I am so proud of you for choosing terrific goals and sharing them so bravely. Let’s end with our class cheer. When I say ‘Finish,’ you say ‘Strong!’ Finish!”
Students: “Strong!”
Teacher: “Finish!”
Students: “Strong!”

Teacher: “Fantastic! Remember to look at our poster each morning. Let’s help each other finish this year on a high note. You can do it!”

Smile and give a round of applause.
