Finding Positive Ways to Cope Plan

Teach the student to recognize negative feelings and substitute self-harming threats with positive coping strategies through identifying emotions and practicing alternative actions in a supportive environment.

This lesson is designed to help the student manage stress and emotional dysregulation, ultimately reducing self-harming threats and promoting safer, more constructive behaviors.

Two sessions of 15 minutes each

Prep

Preparation

10 minutes

  • Prepare visual aids for emotion recognition (e.g., emotion cards, posters)
  • Ensure a calm, distraction-free environment for the one-on-one sessions
  • Gather any additional materials needed for role-play and interactive discussion

Step 1

Session 1: Recognizing Emotions

15 minutes

  • Begin with a calm discussion about various feelings using emotion cards or related visuals
  • Ask the student to identify and label their feelings in different scenarios
  • Use guided questions to help the student articulate what triggers their stress or negative behavior
  • Introduce the concept of using alternative actions like deep breathing or asking for help instead of making threats

Step 2

Session 2: Practicing Positive Coping Strategies

15 minutes

  • Start with a brief recap of the first session and revisit identified emotions
  • Engage the student in role-playing exercises to practice positive responses when feeling overwhelmed
  • Reinforce the effectiveness of alternative actions with positive feedback
  • Conclude with a discussion of the coping strategies practiced and encourage the student to ask questions or suggest additional ideas
