    - Briefly introduce the idea that we all have different feelings and it's okay to feel them.

Circle Time Story: The Color Monster

10 minutes

  • Use the The Color Monster Story Script to read aloud the story.
    - As you read, pause and ask students to identify the emotions depicted.
    - Encourage discussion about what makes the Color Monster feel happy, sad, or mad.

Step 3

Feelings Song and Dance

Emotion Face Craft

10 minutes

  • Distribute construction paper, crayons/markers, craft sticks, and glue.
    - Guide students to draw three different faces on separate pieces of paper: happy, sad, and mad.
    - After drawing, have them cut out their faces and glue each one to a craft stick to create emotion puppets.
    - Encourage students to show and name each emotion as they create it.

Step 5

Partner Sharing & Wrap-Up

5 minutes

  • Have students partner up and use their emotion puppets to show each other a happy, sad, and mad face.
    - Ask partners to name the emotion their peer is showing.
    - Reiterate that all feelings are okay and it's good to talk about them.
    - Distribute the At-Home Feelings Chart for students to take home and share with their families.
    - Conclude by asking students to show their favorite emotion face from the craft.

Welcome to Feelings Fun!

Today, we're going to explore our amazing feelings!

Welcome students and introduce the topic of feelings. Ask what feelings are and if they can name any.

The Color Monster Story

Let's read about a monster who felt all mixed up! How do you think he felt?

Introduce the idea that feelings can change, just like the colors in the story. Prepare to read 'The Color Monster'.

Sing & Show Your Feelings!

It's time to sing a song about feelings! Let's show happy, sad, and mad faces.

Lead the 'If You're Happy and You Know It' song. Encourage students to show different emotions with their faces and bodies.

Emotion Face Puppets

Now, let's make our own feeling puppets! Draw a happy, a sad, and a mad face.

Explain the craft activity: making emotion puppets. Guide students through drawing and creating their happy, sad, and mad faces on sticks.

Share Your Feelings!

Show your feeling puppets to a friend! Can you name their feelings? Remember to take your feelings chart home!

Encourage students to share their puppets with a partner and identify each other's emotions. Distribute the 'At-Home Feelings Chart'.

Script

The Color Monster Story Script

Teacher: Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to meet a very special friend, the Color Monster. Sometimes, the Color Monster's feelings get all mixed up, just like a big tangle of colorful yarn! But don't worry, we're going to help him sort them out.

(Hold up the book or a visual of the Color Monster. Start with him looking confused or with many colors mixed together.)

Teacher: Look at the Color Monster! How do you think he feels right now? He looks a little... messy, right? His feelings are all over the place! Let's help him untangle them.

Happy (Yellow)

Teacher: Oh, look! When the Color Monster feels happy, he shines like the sun, and he's bright yellow! Happy is when you want to jump and play, or when you get a big hug!

(Show a yellow Color Monster or a happy face.)

Teacher: Can everyone show me your happy face? What makes you feel happy?

(Allow a few students to share.)

Teacher: Yes! Playing with friends, eating yummy snacks, or hearing a funny joke can make us happy! Just like the Color Monster!

Sad (Blue)

Teacher: Uh oh. Now the Color Monster is feeling sad. When he's sad, he looks like a rainy day, all blue.

(Show a blue Color Monster or a sad face.)

Teacher: Can everyone show me your sad face? What makes you feel sad?

(Allow a few students to share.)

Teacher: Sometimes we feel sad if we miss someone, or if we fall down and get a boo-boo. It's okay to feel sad, and it's good to talk about it.

Mad (Red)

Teacher: Whoa! Now the Color Monster is mad! When he's mad, he is bright red, like fire! He wants to stomp his feet and yell!

(Show a red Color Monster or a mad face.)

Teacher: Can everyone show me your mad face? What makes you feel mad?

(Allow a few students to share.)

Teacher: It's okay to feel mad, but it's important to know what to do when we feel mad. We can take a deep breath, or tell a grown-up how we feel, instead of stomping or yelling. The Color Monster is learning to do that too!

Teacher: So, we helped the Color Monster sort his feelings! We learned about happy, sad, and mad. Remember, all your feelings are important, and it's good to talk about them! Now, let's keep exploring our feelings!
