Lesson Plan

Feelings & Friends

Students will be able to identify and name common emotions (happy, sad, mad) in themselves and others, and understand how to respond kindly to others' feelings.

Developing social awareness helps Pre-K students understand their own feelings and the feelings of their classmates, which is crucial for building friendships, resolving conflicts, and creating a supportive classroom community.

Audience

Pre-K Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion, story-based learning, and a creative activity.

Materials

Whiteboard or projector, Feelings & Friends Slide Deck, A children's book about emotions (e.g., The Color Monster or Glad Monster, Sad Monster), Crayons or markers, Paper plates (one per student), Pre-cut shapes for facial features (eyes, mouths – varying expressions), and Glue sticks

Prep

Gather Materials & Review

15 minutes

  • Review the Feelings & Friends Slide Deck and practice the script.
    * Gather the children's book about emotions, crayons/markers, paper plates, pre-cut facial features, and glue sticks.
    * Ensure projector or whiteboard is set up for the slide deck.
    * Make sure you have enough paper plates, pre-cut shapes, and glue sticks for each student.

Step 1

Warm-Up: How Do You Feel?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students how they are feeling today. Use the Feelings & Friends Slide Deck (Slide 1) to introduce different emotion words and facial expressions.
    * Ask students to show with their faces how they feel. Point out different facial cues for happy, sad, and mad.
    * Teacher Script: "Good morning, everyone! How are we all feeling today? Take a look at these faces on the screen. Do you see a happy face? A sad face? A mad face? Show me with your own face how you're feeling right now!"

Step 2

Story Time: Exploring Emotions

10 minutes

  • Read a children's book about emotions (e.g., The Color Monster or Glad Monster, Sad Monster).
    * Pause during the story to ask students to identify the emotions the characters are feeling and why they might be feeling that way. Use Feelings & Friends Slide Deck (Slides 2-4) to reinforce emotions.
    * Teacher Script: "Let's read a special book about feelings! As we read, I want you to watch the characters' faces and think about how they might be feeling. If you see a character that looks happy, show me your happy face! If they look sad, show me your sad face. What do you think makes them feel that way?"

Step 3

Activity: My Feelings Face

10 minutes

  • Distribute paper plates, pre-cut facial features, crayons/markers, and glue sticks.
    * Instruct students to create a "Feelings Face" on their plate, showing an emotion they have felt before or an emotion they see in a friend. They can draw or use the pre-cut shapes.
    * Encourage them to talk about why they chose that emotion.
    * Teacher Script: "Now it's your turn to be an artist! I'm giving you a paper plate and some shapes for eyes and mouths. You can draw or glue them to make a face showing how you feel, or how a friend might feel. What emotion will your face show? Why did you choose that one?"

Step 4

Cool-Down: Share Your Face!

Teacher Script: Feelings & Friends

Introduction (Slide 1: Welcome, Friends! - 5 minutes)

"Good morning, everyone! Give me a big smile! Today we're going to talk all about feelings! How are we all feeling today? Thumbs up if you're happy, thumbs down if you're feeling a little sad, or wiggle your fingers if you're feeling silly!"

"Take a look at these faces on the screen [point to Slide 1]. Do you see a happy face? Can you show me your happy face? [Pause for responses] Yes, great happy faces!"

"Do you see a sad face? [Pause] What does a sad face look like? Show me your sad face. [Pause] Good job noticing!"

"And what about a mad face? [Pause] Sometimes we feel mad, don't we? Show me your mad face. [Pause] Fantastic! It's good to know all the different ways we can feel."

Story Time: Exploring Emotions (Slides 2-4: Feeling Happy!, Feeling Sad?, Feeling Mad! - 10 minutes)

"Now, let's read a special book about feelings! I have The Color Monster (or Glad Monster, Sad Monster) here. As we read, I want you to watch the characters' faces and think about how they might be feeling. If you see a character that looks happy, show me your happy face! If they look sad, show me your sad face. What do you think makes them feel that way?"

  • [Read selected pages of the book, pausing to engage students with questions like: "How do you think [character name] feels right now? Look at their face! What happened in the story to make them feel [emotion]?"]*

"Wow, that was a great story about feelings! It shows us that everyone has different feelings, and that's okay!"

Activity: My Feelings Face (Slide 5: Our Friends Have Feelings Too!, Slide 6: Activity: My Feelings Face - 10 minutes)

"Now it's your turn to be an artist and show your feelings! I'm going to give each of you a paper plate, and some shapes for eyes and mouths. You can also use your crayons or markers."

"Your job is to make a 'Feelings Face' on your plate. You can choose to show an emotion you've felt before, or maybe an emotion you think a friend might feel. What emotion will your face show? Happy? Sad? Mad? Silly? Why did you choose that one?"

  • [Distribute materials and walk around, offering assistance and prompting discussion: "Tell me about your feelings face! What emotion is it showing? When do you feel that way?"]*

Cool-Down: Share Your Face! (Slide 7: Being a Feelings Friend! - 5 minutes)

"Look at all these wonderful feelings faces! Before we finish, let's share them with our friends."

"Who would like to show their feelings face and tell us what emotion it shows? [Call on a few students]."

"And what can we do if we see a friend with a sad face? [Encourage ideas like 'give them a hug,' 'ask if they're okay.'] Yes, being a good friend means we try to understand how others feel and we try to be kind."

"Thank you for sharing your amazing feelings faces! Remember, it's okay to feel all sorts of emotions, and being kind to ourselves and others makes everyone feel better! Give yourselves a big clap!"
