Feelings identification

In this lesson, students will learn to identify and express different feelings by reading a story and participating in a group activity. This lesson helps young learners understand and articulate their emotions, an essential skill for social-emotional development. This lesson aligns with ASCA standards on emotional self-awareness, self-management, and social skills development. Specifically, it focuses on helping students identify and express feelings, demonstrate empathy, and create positive relationships.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Gather students in a circle. Explain that today, they will learn about different feelings. Ask students to share how they feel today. Briefly introduce the storybook that will be read.

Step 2

Reading

10 mins

Read the chosen feelings storybook aloud to the class. Pause occasionally to ask questions like 'How do you think the character feels now?' and 'Have you ever felt this way?' Encourage students to express their thoughts and feelings.

Step 3

Discussion

5 mins

Discuss the different feelings mentioned in the story. Ask questions to prompt discussion about feelings: 'What makes you feel happy?', 'What do you do when you feel sad?'. Encourage students to share their experiences and validate their feelings.

Step 4

Activity

8 mins

Hand out printable emotion cards with feeling faces cutouts and feeling words labels. Have students match the feeling faces with the correct feeling words. After matching, ask students to choose the card that matches how they are feeling right now. Have them draw a picture on large paper of a time when they felt that way. Students can then share their drawings with the class.

Closure

Summarize the lesson by reinforcing the importance of recognizing and expressing feelings. Praise the students for sharing their emotions. End with a group hug or a fun cheer.
