Feeling Faces Fun!
Students will be able to identify and name basic emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised, scared) in themselves and others.
Understanding and expressing emotions is a fundamental life skill that helps children navigate social situations, build healthy relationships, and develop self-awareness. This lesson provides a safe and engaging introduction to these crucial concepts.

Preparation
15 minutes
- Review the Feeling Faces Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
- Print and cut out the Emotion Cards.
- Print enough copies of the My Feeling Faces Worksheet for each student.
- Ensure projector or whiteboard is ready for display.
- Gather crayons or markers for student use.
Step 1
Warm-Up: How Are You Feeling?
5 minutes
- Begin with the Warm Up: Feeling Check-In.
- Ask students to share one feeling they have right now and briefly explain why. Encourage a few volunteers to share with the class.
- Transition by explaining that today we will learn more about different feelings.
Step 2
Introducing Feeling Faces
10 minutes
- Use the Feeling Faces Slide Deck to introduce basic emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised, scared).
- For each emotion, show the slide, make the face, and ask students to mimic the face and describe what the feeling looks like and feels like in their body.
- Read the corresponding text on the slides. (Refer to Script: Feeling Faces Fun! for exact wording and prompts).
Step 3
Activity: Emotion Charades!
10 minutes
- Distribute the Emotion Cards to small groups or have students pick one. (Ensure a mix of emotions).
- Explain that students will silently act out the emotion on their card while other students guess.
- Circulate and provide support, encouraging students to think about facial expressions and body language.
- After a few rounds, bring the class back together for a brief discussion on how acting out feelings felt.
Step 4
Wrap-Up: My Feeling Faces
5 minutes
- Distribute the My Feeling Faces Worksheet.
- Instruct students to draw a face showing how they feel about learning about emotions today. They can also draw a face for another emotion they learned.
- Use the Cool Down: Feeling Reflection to end the lesson.
- Collect worksheets for review, if desired.

Feeling Faces Fun!
Let's explore our feelings together!
Welcome students and introduce the idea of feelings. Ask them if they know what feelings are. No right or wrong answers, just get them thinking!
What are Feelings?
Feelings are what we feel inside our bodies and show on our faces!
Ask students: "What do you think 'feelings' are?" or "What are some feelings you know?" Encourage a few responses.
Happy!
When you feel good, joyful, or excited!
(Show a happy face and ask students to make one!)
Model a happy face and ask students to make one too. "When do you feel happy? What does happy feel like in your body?"
Sad!
When you feel down, upset, or like crying.
(Show a sad face and ask students to make one!)
Model a sad face and ask students to make one. "When do you feel sad? What does sad feel like in your body?"
Angry!
When you feel mad, frustrated, or annoyed.
(Show an angry face and ask students to make one!)
Model an angry face and ask students to make one. "When do you feel angry? What does angry feel like in your body?"
Surprised!
When something unexpected happens!

Scared!
When you feel frightened or unsafe.

All Feelings Are Okay!
It's okay to feel happy, sad, angry, surprised, or scared. All feelings are important!
Reiterate that all feelings are okay and important. "Who can tell me one feeling they learned today?"

Warm-Up: How Are You Feeling? (5 minutes)
"Good morning, everyone! Or good afternoon! Let's start our day with a quick feeling check-in. How are you feeling right now? Think about how your body feels, and what's going on inside. You don't have to shout it out, just think about it for a moment.
"
"Would anyone like to share how they are feeling right now? And maybe tell us a tiny bit about why? No pressure at all, but if you want to share, raise a quiet hand."
(Allow a few students to share. Validate all feelings.)
"That's wonderful! It's so important to notice how we are feeling. Today, we are going to learn all about different feelings and what they look and feel like!"

"Welcome to Feeling Faces Fun! Today we're going to become feeling detectives and learn to spot different emotions!"

"What do you think feelings are? Take a guess!"
(Listen to student responses.)
"That's right! Feelings are what we feel inside our bodies, and sometimes we can see them on our faces too! Let's look at some important feelings."

"Look at this face! What feeling do you think this is?" (Pause for responses) "Yes, it's a happy face! Can everyone make a happy face? Show me your biggest, brightest smiles!"
"When do you feel happy? What does happy feel like in your body?"
(Allow a few students to share.)

"Now, how about this face? What feeling is this?" (Pause for responses) "That's a sad face. Can you make a sad face? Sometimes our mouths turn down, and maybe our eyebrows go up a little."
"When do you feel sad? What does sad feel like in your body?"
(Allow a few students to share.)

"What about this one? This face looks a little... grrr! What feeling do you see here?" (Pause for responses) "You got it! This is an angry face. Can you show me your angry face? Sometimes our eyebrows squish down, and our mouths might be tight."
"When do you feel angry? What does angry feel like in your body?"
(Allow a few students to share.)

"Whoa! Look at this face! What just happened? What feeling is this?" (Pause for responses) "That's right, surprised! Can you make a surprised face? Our eyes get wide, and our mouths might open like an 'O'!
"When do you feel surprised? What makes you feel surprised?"

"Uh oh! This face looks a little worried. What feeling do you think this is?" (Pause for responses) "It's a scared face. Can you make a scared face? Sometimes our eyes are big, and we might even shiver a little."
"When do you feel scared? What does scared feel like?"

"Great job being feeling detectives! Remember, it's okay to feel happy, sad, angry, surprised, or scared. All of our feelings are important and tell us something. What's one feeling you learned about today?"

Activity: Emotion Charades! (10 minutes)
"Now it's time for a super fun game called Emotion Charades! I have some special Emotion Cards here. We're going to play in small groups. Each group will get some cards, and you'll take turns picking a card and silently acting out the feeling on it. Your teammates will guess what feeling you're showing! Remember to use your whole body, not just your face, but don't use any words!"
(Distribute Emotion Cards. Circulate and assist groups. Encourage students to really embody the emotions. After a few rounds, bring the class back together.)
"Wow, you were all amazing actors and guessers! How did it feel to act out those different emotions?"
Wrap-Up: My Feeling Faces (5 minutes)
"To finish our feeling journey today, you're going to get your very own My Feeling Faces Worksheet! On this paper, I want you to draw a face showing how you feel right now after learning all about emotions. You can also draw a face for another emotion you learned today if you like!"
(Distribute My Feeling Faces Worksheet and crayons/markers. Provide brief instructions again. Collect worksheets if desired.)
"Thank you, everyone, for exploring your feelings today! Remember, it's good to know how we feel and to tell someone if we need help with a big feeling!"
