Lesson Plan

Feeling Faces Fun!

Students will be able to identify and name basic emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised) by observing facial expressions and body language in others.

Understanding others' emotions is a foundational social-emotional skill that helps children build empathy, develop healthy relationships, and navigate social situations more effectively. This lesson provides a safe space to explore these important concepts.

Step 1

Warm-Up: How Are We Feeling?

2 minutes

  • Greet students and ask them to show with their faces how they are feeling right now. (e.g., "Show me your happy face! Show me your sleepy face!").
    * Briefly acknowledge a few responses, reinforcing the idea that everyone has feelings.

Step 2

Introduction: What Are Feelings?

3 minutes

  • Introduce the idea that feelings are things we all experience and we can often tell how someone is feeling by looking at their face and body.
    * Show the first slide of the Feeling Faces Fun! Slide Deck and ask students to identify the emotion. Briefly discuss why they think that person feels that way.
    * Introduce the Emotion Cards and explain that each card shows a different feeling.

Step 3

Activity: Guess the Feeling!

6 minutes

  • Hold up one Emotion Card at a time.
    * Ask students: "What feeling do you see? How can you tell?" (e.g., "Her mouth is smiling, her eyes are crinkly!").
    * Encourage students to mimic the expression.
    * Distribute the Feeling Faces Activity sheets and crayons/markers. Instruct students to draw a face showing a specific emotion (e.g., "Draw a happy face!"). Circulate to provide support and engage with students individually.

Step 4

Discussion: Sharing Feelings

3 minutes

  • Have each student share their drawing from the Feeling Faces Activity and name the emotion they drew.

Wiggle Your Feelings Out!

Let's end our lesson by wiggling out our feelings!

Instructions:

  1. Happy Wiggles: Wiggle your body like you're super happy!
  2. Sad Wiggles: Wiggle your body slowly and gently, like you're a little sad.
  3. Angry Stomps: Stomp your feet a few times to show angry energy (but not at anyone!).
  4. Surprise Jumps: Jump up quickly like something surprised you!

This helps us understand that we can move our bodies to express our feelings!
