Festival Fun Craft

Students will create a simple pumpkin craft to celebrate fall festivals while practicing yes/no question-response patterns. They will improve fine motor skills and reinforce understanding of yes/no questions.

This lesson supports social engagement and language development in a small-group setting. It builds fine motor control through crafting and helps students practice question-response skills critical for classroom participation.

Prep

Prepare Festival Craft Materials

5 minutes

  • Gather and arrange scissors, glue sticks, crayons/markers, pumpkin templates, and cleanup supplies.
  • Print enough Yes/No Question Cards for each student.
  • Pre-cut or organize pumpkin template sheets at each station.
  • Draw two columns labeled “Yes” and “No” on chart paper and place marker nearby.

Step 1

Welcome and Introduction

  • Greet students and introduce the fall festival theme.
  • Show an example pumpkin craft and model coloring/cutting.
  • Ask a demonstration yes/no question (e.g., “Is a pumpkin orange?”) and have students respond aloud.

8 minutes

  • Distribute pumpkin templates, scissors, glue, and coloring tools.
  • Guide students to cut, color, and assemble their pumpkin faces.

Pumpkin Craft Activity

Materials:

  • Pumpkin Template Sheet
  • Safety Scissors
  • Crayons or Markers
  • Glue Stick
  • Newspaper or scrap paper (for workspace)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace
    • Lay down newspaper or scrap paper to keep your table clean.
  2. Color the Pumpkin
    • Use crayons or markers to color the pumpkin outline on the template sheet.


  3. Cut Out the Pumpkin Body
    • Carefully cut along the edges of your colored pumpkin shape.





  4. Color and Cut Facial Features
    • On the same sheet or a second template, color the eyes, nose, and mouth shapes.
    • Cut out each facial piece neatly.





  5. Arrange Your Design
    • Place the eyes, nose, and mouth on the pumpkin body in different layouts.
    • Try making a happy face, a spooky face, or a silly face.
  6. Glue the Pieces
    • Apply glue to the back of each facial feature.
    • Press them firmly onto the pumpkin body.


  7. Practice a Yes/No Question
    • Ask your partner: “Is your pumpkin smiling?”
    • Listen for their “Yes” or “No” answer, then swap roles.









  8. Dry and Display
    • Allow your pumpkin to dry for 1–2 minutes.
    • Help hang your pumpkin on the classroom bulletin board for our Fall Festival gallery.
