Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Think-Pair-Share

5 minutes

  • Display a thought-provoking image or statement related to diversity (e.g., a mosaic, a quote about different perspectives) on the Introduction to Diversity Slide Deck (Slide 1).
    - Ask students: "What does 'diversity' mean to you?"
    - Have students briefly jot down their thoughts, then turn to a partner to share for 1-2 minutes.
    - Bring the class back together for a quick 1-minute share-out of key ideas. Record a few keywords on the board.

Step 2

Introduction to Religion & Culture

10 minutes

  • Using the Introduction to Diversity Slide Deck (Slides 2-4), briefly introduce the concepts of religion and culture.
    - Emphasize that these are broad terms encompassing beliefs, values, traditions, and practices.
    - Facilitate a brief discussion using questions from the Diversity Discussion Guide such as: "Why is it important to learn about different religions and cultures?" (Slide 3).
    - Highlight common threads across cultures and religions (e.g., community, values, celebrations) and unique expressions (e.g., specific rituals, languages) (Slide 4).

Step 3

Cultural Kaleidoscope Activity

15 minutes

  • Distribute the Cultural Kaleidoscope Worksheet.
    - Explain the activity: Students will choose 2-3 different cultures or religions they are curious about (or that are represented in their community/classroom, without singling out individuals). They will then research (if time allows, or recall prior knowledge) and note down one unique tradition/belief and one common value/practice they share with other cultures (e.g., importance of family, celebrations of new beginnings).
    - Students can work individually or in pairs. Circulate to provide support and answer questions.
    - After 10 minutes, bring the class back together. Ask a few students to share one interesting discovery from their worksheet, emphasizing respectful listening.

Step 4

Wrap-Up: Reflection & Respect

10 minutes

  • Display the Reflection Journal Prompt on the Introduction to Diversity Slide Deck (Slide 5).
    - Ask students to write a short reflection in their notebooks or on a separate sheet of paper based on the prompt: "How does understanding cultural and religious diversity make our world a better place, and what is one way you can show respect for someone else's beliefs or traditions?"
    - Collect the Cultural Kaleidoscope Worksheet or have students keep it for their records.
    - Conclude by reiterating the importance of respect, empathy, and open-mindedness when engaging with diverse beliefs and cultures.
