Game

Number Sombrero Toss Game

Objective

To quickly and accurately solve addition and subtraction facts within 20 while having fun!

Materials

  • Small sombreros, cones, or bowls (labeled with + or - symbols)
  • Beanbags or cards with numbers 0-20
  • Fiesta Scorecard for each student

Setup

  1. Place the sombreros/cones/bowls on the floor a few feet away from the throwing line.
  2. Label some with a "+" sign and others with a "-" sign.
  3. Have a pile of numbered beanbags/cards (0-20) available for students to pick from.

How to Play

  1. Divide into Teams: Students will play in small groups (2-4 students per group).
  2. Take Turns: Each student takes a turn.
  3. Choose an Operation: The student decides if they want to practice addition or subtraction and aims for the corresponding sombrero/cone/bowl.
  4. Toss a Number: The student tosses a beanbag/card with a number on it towards their chosen sombrero. The number on the beanbag/card will be the second number in their math fact.
  5. Determine the First Number: The teacher will call out the first number (e.g., "8").
  6. Solve the Fact: The student then solves the math fact (e.g., if they tossed a "5" into the "+" sombrero and the teacher called "8", they solve 8 + 5 = ?).
  7. Record and Check: The student writes down the problem and their answer on their Fiesta Scorecard. Group members can help check answers.
  8. Earn a Point: If the answer is correct, the student earns a point for their team.
  9. Continue Playing: Students continue taking turns until time is called.

Winning the Fiesta

The team with the most correct answers on their Fiesta Scorecard at the end of the game wins the Fact Fluency Fiesta!
