¡Exprésate con Respeto! / Express Yourself, Respectfully!
Comunicación Positiva / Positive Communication
¿Cómo compartimos lo que sentimos? / How do we share what we feel?
Welcome students and set a positive tone. Ask students to think about how they tell others how they feel. This is a warm-up to gauge their current communication methods. Transition to the idea that there's a good way to share feelings without arguments.
Hablar de Sentimientos / Talking About Feelings
Sometimes, it's hard to say how we feel without others getting upset.
Today we'll learn a special way to share our feelings that helps everyone understand each other better, without blaming anyone!
Introduce the topic of communication and how it can sometimes be tricky. Explain that today, they will learn a special way to talk that helps everyone understand each other better and avoids blaming.
Mensajes 'Yo' / 'I' Messages
An 'I-Message' is a way to talk about how you feel and what you need, without making the other person feel bad or guilty.
It's your way to be assertive and clear!
Introduce I-messages as the main tool. Explain what an I-message is in simple terms: a way to talk about your feelings and needs.
Las Partes de un Mensaje 'Yo' / The Parts of an 'I' Message
Un Mensaje Yo tiene 3 partes importantes:
An I-Message has 3 important parts:
- "Yo siento..." / "I feel..." (Your emotion / Tu emoción)
- "cuando tú..." / "when you..." (What happened / Lo que pasó)
- "porque..." / "because..." (Why it affects you / Por qué te afecta)
Break down the structure of an I-message into three easy-to-remember parts. Go over each part clearly, providing a quick, simple example for each.
Ejemplo: ¡No Culpando! / Example: No Blaming!
Forma de Culpar / Blaming Way:
"¡Tú siempre me interrumpes! ¡Eres tan grosero!"
"You always interrupt me! You are so rude!"
Con un Mensaje 'Yo' / With an 'I' Message:
"Yo siento frustración cuando tú hablas mientras yo estoy hablando porque entonces me olvido de lo que iba a decir y no me siento escuchado."
"I feel frustrated when you talk while I am speaking because then I forget what I was going to say and I don't feel heard."
Provide a clear example, first the 'blaming' way, then the 'I-message' way. Emphasize how the I-message focuses on personal feelings and the impact, not on judging the other person's actions. Read both English and Spanish.
Otro Ejemplo / Another Example
Let's read this example together. Can you find the three parts of the 'I' Message?

Give another example. Ask students to identify the three parts in this example. This is an interactive slide to check for understanding.
