Exploring Nature Adventure

Learn about local plants and animals

This lesson involves taking students on a nature walk to learn about local plants and animals. They will engage in a scavenger hunt and record their findings in a nature journal. This lesson promotes physical activity, observation skills, and a deeper appreciation for the environment.

Materials

Nature scavenger hunt printable, Nature journals, Pens or pencils, Clipboards (optional), Bags for collecting small items (optional), and Magnifying glasses (optional)

Step 1

Introduction

10 mins

  • Explain the purpose of the nature walk.
  • Discuss what students already know about local plants and animals.
  • Introduce the scavenger hunt and nature journal activities.

Step 2

Nature Walk & Scavenger Hunt

30 mins

  • Take the students on a nature walk around the school or local park.
  • Use the scavenger hunt printable to identify and collect items.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and observe carefully.
  • Allow students to collect small, safe items to inspect later.

Step 3

Nature Journal Activity

15 mins

  • Once back in the classroom, distribute nature journals.
  • Ask students to draw and write about what they found.
  • Encourage them to use their senses to describe their experiences (e.g., sight, smell, touch).
  • Share and discuss findings as a group.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

  • Recap what was learned during the nature walk.
  • Ask students to share their favorite discovery.
  • Discuss the importance of caring for the environment.
