Exploring Cultural Festivals and Holidays

Research and present diverse cultural festivals

In this lesson, students will research and present different cultural festivals and holidays from around the world. They will create posters to visually represent their findings and give short presentations to the class. This lesson helps students develop research skills, encourages cultural appreciation, and enhances public speaking abilities.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Begin by engaging students with a brief discussion about the importance of cultural festivals and holidays.
  • Ask questions like: "What are some festivals or holidays your family celebrates?" and "Why are these celebrations important to your culture?"
  • Briefly explain the day's activity: Students will work in pairs to research a specific cultural festival or holiday, create a poster, and present their findings to the class.

Step 2

Research Activity

20 mins

  • Divide students into pairs and assign each pair a different cultural festival or holiday.
  • Provide students with the research guide worksheet to help them focus on key information (e.g., origin, customs, significance).
  • Allow students time to research their assigned festival or holiday using computers or tablets.

Step 3

Poster Creation

15 mins

  • After researching, students will use the information they've gathered to create an informative and visually appealing poster.
  • Provide poster boards, markers, and other art supplies.
  • Encourage creativity but remind students to include essential information from their research.

Step 4

Presentations

15 mins

  • Each pair will present their poster and findings to the class.
  • Encourage students to speak clearly and to answer any questions their classmates might have.

Step 5

Closure

5 mins

  • Facilitate a brief discussion about what students learned from each other's presentations.
  • Ask questions like: "What was the most surprising festival or holiday you learned about?" or "How do these festivals and holidays help bring people together?"
  • Summarize the key takeaways from the lesson and emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures.
