Lesson Plan

Expectation Exploration

Students will be able to identify and demonstrate at least three classroom behavior expectations and social skills.

Following classroom expectations creates a positive and safe learning environment where everyone can learn, participate, and make friends. Understanding social skills helps students interact respectfully and kindly with their peers and teachers.

  • Expectation Exploration Slide Deck, - My Super Classroom Rules Worksheet, and - Behavior Scenarios Activity Cards

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Review the Expectation Exploration Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
    - Print copies of the My Super Classroom Rules Worksheet, one per student.
    - Cut out the Behavior Scenarios Activity Cards for the activity.
    - Ensure you have a whiteboard or chart paper and markers readily available.

Warm-Up: What Makes a Great Classroom?

  • Begin by asking students: "What makes our classroom a great place to learn and play?" (1 minute)
    - Guide a brief discussion, writing down key ideas on the board (e.g.,

  • Use the Expectation Exploration Slide Deck to introduce and discuss 3-5 key classroom expectations.
    - For each expectation, ask students: "What does this look like? What does it sound like?" (e.g.,

7 minutes

  • Distribute the My Super Classroom Rules Worksheet.
    - Instruct students to draw or write about one or two classroom expectations they think are most important. (5 minutes)
    - Have a few students share their chosen rules and drawings with the class. (2 minutes)

Practice Makes Perfect: Behavior Scenarios

8 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups or pairs.
    - Give each group a Behavior Scenarios Activity Card.
    - Instruct them to discuss or briefly role-play how they would respond to the scenario by demonstrating good social skills and following expectations. (5 minutes)
    - Bring the class back together and have one or two groups share their scenarios and solutions. (3 minutes)

Cool-Down: Thumbs Up for Expectations

  • Ask students to give a 'thumbs up' if they feel confident about following classroom expectations.
    - Ask: "What is one expectation you will try your best to remember today?"
    - Conclude by reinforcing the importance of working together to make the classroom a great place for everyone.
