Executive Edge Tier 2 Small-Group Session 1

6th Grade | 30 Minutes

Empowering you to take control of your learning by using data to drive improvement.

Welcome everyone to our first Executive Edge session! Introduce yourself and briefly explain the purpose: using objective data to build skills in organization, time management, and self-regulation.

Session Objectives

• Analyze your executive functioning data
• Identify common strengths & challenges
• Brainstorm practical strategies
• Develop SMART goals to improve skills
• Commit to two action steps before next session

Explain each objective clearly. Emphasize that today’s work will guide every future session and help students take ownership of their learning.

Reviewing Your Data

  1. Open your data from Executive Edge Referral Form.
  2. What strengths do you see in the group?
  3. What challenges pop up most often?
  4. Share one strength and one challenge with a partner.

Display anonymized referral data collected via the Executive Edge Referral Form. Guide students to look for trends (e.g., frequently missed deadlines, disorganized materials).

Strategy Brainstorm

• Write one idea for improving organization—time management—self-regulation on a sticky note.
• Place your note under the matching skill on the board.
• Let’s group similar ideas and discuss which will help you most.

Distribute sticky notes. Encourage creative yet realistic strategies. After clustering, highlight the most practical ideas and link them back to data trends.

Writing SMART Goals

Use this formula to pick one challenge and write a goal:
• Specific – What exactly will you do?
• Measurable – How will you track progress?
• Achievable – Is it realistic?
• Relevant – Does it relate to your challenge?
• Time-bound – When will you accomplish it?

Now write your SMART goal in your journal.

Introduce the SMART framework. Write an example goal on the board (e.g., “I will color-code my planner weekly to track at least three upcoming assignments by Friday afternoon.”). Then support students as they draft their own.

Next Steps & Commitment

  1. Choose two actions you will try before our next session.
  2. Write them in your journal and circle them.
  3. We will reconvene on [DATE] to review progress.
  4. Track your success daily and bring evidence to the next meeting.

Ask each student to share their two action steps aloud. Reinforce accountability by noting when the next check-in will occur and how they’ll record progress.

Strategy Brainstorm Worksheet

Use the Executive Edge Strategy Worksheet to capture your ideas for each skill area. Write at least two strategies under each column and be ready to share your top picks.

Distribute the strategy brainstorming worksheet so students can systematically record and categorize their ideas.

SMART Goal Worksheet

Complete the Executive Edge SMART Goal Worksheet by filling in each SMART component. Then write your final goal at the bottom.

Hand out the SMART Goal Worksheet. Walk through each section to ensure clarity before students finalize their goals.
