Everyday Life Hacks

Essential Skills for 6th Graders

Welcome everyone! Today we're diving into "Everyday Life Hacks"—essential skills you can use at home and at school. Engage students by asking if they've heard the term "life skills" and why they think these might be important.

Lesson Objectives

• Learn three essential life skills: time management, organization, and effective communication
• Practice each skill through interactive stations
• Set one personal goal to apply a skill this week

Read each objective aloud. Emphasize the three skills, the hands-on station activities, and setting a personal goal. Explain that by the end of class, they’ll know how to apply one skill in real life.

What Are Life Skills?

Life skills are abilities that help you handle everyday tasks and challenges. They make you more independent, confident, and ready for school and life outside the classroom.

Ask students: “What are life skills? Can you name any examples?” Record quick responses on the board. Then share the definition and why life skills matter for their independence.

Life Skills We'll Cover

• Time Management
• Organization
• Effective Communication

Briefly describe each skill and link them to daily routines. For example, using time wisely for homework, keeping lockers neat, and talking clearly with teammates.

Time Management

Prioritize tasks, break big projects into steps, and plan your day using a schedule. See the Time Management Tips Chart for examples.

Display the Time Management Tips Chart on the board or projector. Walk through prioritizing tasks, breaking big jobs into smaller steps, and scheduling short breaks.

Organization Strategies

Sort materials, keep a checklist, and plan ahead to stay organized. Practice more with the Organization Checklist Worksheet.

Show the Organization Checklist Worksheet. Explain how checking off items keeps spaces tidy and helps find things quickly.

Effective Communication

Use active listening, speak clearly, and ask questions. Practice real-life conversations with the Effective Communication Roleplay Cards.

Introduce the Effective Communication Roleplay Cards. Model one scenario: one student listens, the other speaks clearly using polite tone.

Activity Stations Overview

Rotate through three stations (3–4 minutes each):
• Station A: Time Management
• Station B: Organization
• Station C: Communication

Explain that students will spend about 3–4 minutes at each station, rotating through all three. Remind them to work collaboratively and stay on task.

Station A: Time Management

Plan a daily schedule using the Time Management Tips Chart. Include school, homework, and free time.

Guide groups at Station A to plan a sample daily schedule. Encourage them to think about balancing schoolwork, chores, and free time.

Station B: Organization

Sort sample items and complete the Organization Checklist Worksheet. Focus on keeping spaces tidy.

At Station B, circulate and ask students why certain organization strategies make finding items easier. Praise clear checklists and neat sorting.

Station C: Communication

Role-play everyday scenarios using the Effective Communication Roleplay Cards. Practice listening and speaking skills.

Listen to role-plays at Station C. Highlight strong examples of active listening and clear speaking. Offer tips to improve tone or body language if needed.

Reflection

Write one key takeaway for each life skill in your Reflection Journal Template. Then share with a partner.

Distribute the Reflection Journal Template. Give students 3 minutes to write one takeaway for each skill. Then have them share briefly with a partner.

Exit Ticket

Write one actionable goal for applying a life skill this week using the Exit Ticket Template.

Hand out the Exit Ticket Template. Explain they will write one goal for applying a life skill this week. Collect tickets for a quick check of understanding.

Thank You!

Great job today! Any questions or thoughts before we finish?

Thank students for their participation. Ask if there are any last questions about applying these skills in school or at home.
