What's Up? Hello!

Learning English: Greetings & Introductions

  • Learn how to say hello.
  • Learn how to introduce yourself.
  • Practice speaking English!

Greet the student warmly, perhaps in their native language first, then transition to English. Explain the lesson's goal: to learn how to say hello and introduce ourselves.

Ways to Say Hello

Common Greetings:

  • Hello!
  • Hi!
  • Good morning! (used before noon)
  • Good afternoon! (used after noon until evening)
  • Good evening! (used in the evening)
  • How are you? (a common follow-up question)
  • I'm fine, thank you. (a common response)

Introduce common greetings. Emphasize that 'Hello' and 'Hi' are interchangeable in most casual situations. 'Good morning/afternoon/evening' are more formal and time-specific.

Introducing Yourself

Telling Others Your Name:

  • What's your name?
  • My name is [Your Name].

Example:

  • Teacher: "Hello! What's your name?"
  • Student: "Hi! My name is [Student's Name]."

Explain how to ask and state names. Highlight 'My name is...' as the primary way to introduce oneself. 'What's your name?' is the question.

Ending an Introduction

Being Polite:

  • Nice to meet you!
  • You too! (or 'Nice to meet you too!')

Full Introduction Example:

  • Person 1: "Hello! My name is Alex. What's your name?"
  • Person 2: "Hi Alex! My name is Maria. Nice to meet you!"
  • Person 1: "Nice to meet you too, Maria!"

Introduce 'Nice to meet you.' as a polite closing to an introduction. Practice the whole dialogue. Have the student role-play with you.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Keep Practicing!

  • Try saying hello to your family.
  • Introduce yourself to new people.
  • The more you practice, the easier it gets!

Explain the importance of practice. Encourage the student to try these phrases with family or friends.

Script

Teacher Script: Greetings and Introductions

Warm-Up & Objective Setting (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Bonjour [Student's Name], comment ça va? Aujourd'hui, nous allons commencer à apprendre l'anglais! Nous allons apprendre à dire bonjour et à vous présenter. C'est très important pour parler aux nouvelles personnes!"

Transition to English

Teacher: "Hello! My name is Lenny. What's your name? (Pause for student to respond, assist if needed). Wonderful! Today, we are going to learn how to greet people and introduce ourselves in English. It's really fun and super helpful!"

Teacher: "Before we start, do you know any English greetings already? Maybe 'hello' or 'hi'?"

New Vocabulary & Phrases (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Let's look at our first slide! [Refer to Greetings and Introductions Slide Deck, Slide 2: Ways to Say Hello]. Here are some common ways to say hello in English."

Teacher: "The most common ones are 'Hello' and 'Hi'. Can you say 'Hello'? (Pause for student to repeat). Great! How about 'Hi'? (Pause for student to repeat). Excellent! These two are used almost everywhere."

Teacher: "Then we have 'Good morning', 'Good afternoon', and 'Good evening'. We use these depending on the time of day. 'Good morning' is for the morning, 'Good afternoon' is after lunch, and 'Good evening' is when it starts to get dark. Can you try 'Good morning'? (Pause). How about 'Good afternoon'? (Pause). And 'Good evening'? (Pause). You're doing great with the pronunciation!"

Teacher: "Often, after we say hello, we ask 'How are you?' This is like asking 'Comment ça va?'. Can you try saying 'How are you?' (Pause). And a common response is 'I'm fine, thank you.' Let's try that: 'I'm fine, thank you.' (Pause). Good job!"

Teacher: "Now, let's learn how to tell people our name. [Refer to Greetings and Introductions Slide Deck, Slide 3: Introducing Yourself]. When you want to know someone's name, you ask 'What's your name?' Can you say that? (Pause)."

Teacher: "And when someone asks you, you say 'My name is [Your Name].' So, if I ask you, 'What's your name?', how would you answer? (Guide student to say 'My name is [Student's Name]'). Perfect!"

Guided Practice & Role-Playing (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Alright, now let's practice what we've learned! I have a Dialogue Practice Worksheet for you. (Hand out worksheet). We'll work on this together."

Teacher: "Look at the first exercise. It's a short conversation. Try to fill in the blanks with the correct greetings or introductions we just learned. Take your time, and I'm here to help if you get stuck." (Provide assistance and use Answer Key: Dialogue Practice for reference).

Teacher: "Fantastic work on the worksheet! Now for some role-playing! I'll be one person, and you be the other. Let's imagine we are meeting for the first time."

Teacher: "I'll start: 'Hello! My name is Lenny. What's your name?' (Encourage student to respond using 'Hi! My name is [Student's Name].')"

Teacher: "Excellent! Now, let's add something polite. [Refer to Greetings and Introductions Slide Deck, Slide 4: Ending an Introduction]. We can say 'Nice to meet you!' Can you say 'Nice to meet you!'? (Pause)."

Teacher: "And the other person can say 'Nice to meet you too!' or simply 'You too!' Let's try our role-play again, but this time we'll add 'Nice to meet you.'"

Teacher: "(Starting again) 'Hello! My name is Lenny. What's your name?' (Student responds). 'Nice to meet you, [Student's Name]!' (Encourage student to respond 'Nice to meet you too, Lenny!' or 'You too!')."

Teacher: "That was wonderful! Your pronunciation is really good, and you're using the phrases correctly."

Wrap-Up & Next Steps (5 minutes)

Teacher: "We've covered a lot today! You learned how to say 'Hello' and 'Hi', different 'Good mornings/afternoons/evenings', how to ask 'What's your name?' and respond 'My name is...', and how to say 'Nice to meet you!'."

Teacher: "Remember, practice makes perfect! [Refer to Greetings and Introductions Slide Deck, Slide 5: Practice Makes Perfect!]. The more you use these phrases, the easier they will become. Try saying 'Hello' and introducing yourself to your family or friends this week. You can even try saying 'Good morning' to someone tomorrow!"

Teacher: "You did an amazing job today, [Student's Name]! I'm very proud of your effort. Keep up the great work!"
