Lesson Plan

Energy Everywhere!

Students will be able to identify and give examples of different types of energy, including light, heat, and sound energy, in their daily lives.

Understanding energy helps us make sense of how things work around us, from the sun warming us to the sound of music. It's fundamental to comprehending our physical world.

Audience

2nd Grade Student

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Through visual aids, discussions, and hands-on examples, the student will explore various forms of energy.

Materials

Small everyday objects (e.g., flashlight, hand warmers, small toy that makes noise), Energy Explorer Slide Deck, Energy Quest Worksheet, and Energy Sort Activity

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: What Powers Your World?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking the student: 'What things around us help us see, feel warm, or hear sounds?' (e.g., sun, heater, radio).
    - Briefly discuss their ideas, connecting them to things that 'make stuff happen'.

Step 2

Introducing Energy Types

10 minutes

  • Use the Energy Explorer Slide Deck to introduce light, heat, and sound energy.
    - Show the prepared objects (flashlight, hand warmer, noisy toy) and discuss which type of energy each demonstrates.
    - Encourage the student to share their own examples of each energy type.

Step 3

Energy Sort Activity

8 minutes

  • Engage the student with the Energy Sort Activity.
    - Have the student categorize images or words into groups based on the type of energy they represent (light, heat, or sound).
    - Discuss their choices and reinforce the concepts.

Step 4

Energy Quest Worksheet

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Energy Quest Worksheet.
    - Guide the student through the worksheet, asking them to draw or write examples of each energy type.
    - Provide support as needed.

Step 5

Cool-Down: Energy All Around Us

2 minutes

  • Ask the student: 'What is one new thing you learned about energy today?' or 'Can you point to something in the room that uses energy?'
    - Briefly recap the main types of energy discussed.

Slide Deck

What is Energy?

Energy helps things happen!

It makes things:

  • Move
  • Light up
  • Get warm
  • Make sounds

It's all around us!

Welcome the student and explain that today we're going to become energy explorers! Ask them what they think energy is or what things 'make stuff happen'. Connect their ideas to the concept of energy.

Light Energy

Energy that helps us SEE!

  • The Sun: Our biggest source of light!
  • Flashlights: They light up the dark.
  • Lamps: Light up our rooms.
  • Fireflies: Tiny bugs with their own light!

Can you think of other things that give us light?

Introduce Light Energy. Show the flashlight. Ask: 'What does this give us?' 'Where else do we see light energy?' Encourage examples like the sun, lamps, fireflies.

Heat Energy

Energy that makes things FEEL WARM!

  • The Sun: Also makes us warm!
  • Stoves: Cook our food.
  • Warm drinks: Make us feel cozy.
  • Our bodies: We make heat too!

What makes you feel warm?

Introduce Heat Energy. Show the hand warmer. Ask: 'What does this do?' 'Where do we feel heat energy?' Encourage examples like a warm blanket, stove, or even our own bodies.

Sound Energy

Energy that helps us HEAR!

  • Music: Makes us dance and sing.
  • Our voices: How we talk to each other.
  • Animals: Barks, meows, chirps!
  • Instruments: Make different sounds.

What are your favorite sounds to hear?

Introduce Sound Energy. Show the noisy toy. Ask: 'What kind of energy comes from this?' 'What are some other sounds we hear?' Encourage examples like music, talking, a car horn.

Energy is Everywhere!

Light, Heat, and Sound!

They help us:

  • See
  • Feel warm
  • Hear

Look around! Can you find examples of each energy type right now?

Review all three types of energy. Ask the student to point out examples in the room for each type. Reinforce that energy is everywhere!
