Being Active

This lesson aims to promote physical activity and its benefits among 7-8 year olds through engaging and fun activities. By participating in a game-based activity and a follow-up discussion, kids will learn the importance of staying active for their overall health and well-being.

Step 1

Icebreaker: Movement Circle

  • Have the students stand in a circle.
  • Explain that each person will take turns demonstrating a simple movement (e.g., jumping, spinning, clapping) for everyone else to copy.
  • Begin by demonstrating a movement and have the students follow.
  • Pass the turn to the next student until everyone gets a chance to lead.

Step 2

Introduction

  • Welcome the students and briefly discuss the objectives of the lesson: staying active and having fun.
  • Explain the activities they will engage in and what they will learn from them.
  • Emphasize the importance of physical activity for health and well-being.

Step 3

Activity: Balloon Volleyball

35 mins

  • Inflate several balloons.
  • Set up a "net" using string or tape at a height appropriate for the kids.
  • Explain to the students that they will be playing volleyball with balloons.
  • Divide the students into two teams.
  • Have them hit the balloon back and forth over the net, trying to keep it from touching the ground.
  • Encourage teamwork and communication among the students.

Step 4

Discussion: The Benefits of Being Active

  • Gather the students together and allow them to cool down.
  • Facilitate a discussion using prepared questions to help students reflect on the activity and understand the benefits of staying active.
  • Use the discussion questions to guide the conversation:
    • How did you feel during the balloon volleyball game?
    • What was your favorite part of the game?
    • Why do you think being active is important for your health?
    • How can you stay active at home or at school?
