Approach

Recognize and replace negative self-talk

Materials

Journal or notebook, Pen or pencil, Positive Affirmations Worksheet, and Self-Reflection Questions

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Begin with a brief self-reflection on what self-talk is and how it affects your emotions and actions.
  • Explain that self-talk is the internal dialogue we have with ourselves, which can be positive or negative. Negative self-talk can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem, while positive self-talk can boost confidence and improve mood.
  • Think about a time you felt down because of negative thoughts.

Step 2

Journaling Activity

10 mins

  • Use your journal or notebook to write down a recent negative thought you had about yourself. Examples include: "I'm not good enough," "I always mess things up," or "I'll never succeed."
  • Transform this negative thought into a positive affirmation. Examples include: "I am capable and strong," "I learn from my mistakes," or "I am on the path to success."
  • Consider additional affirmations such as: "I have studied thoroughly, and I am ready to succeed," "I am committed to making positive changes in my life," "I am confident in social situations and enjoy meeting new people," "I trust myself to make the right decisions," "I am worthy of success and happiness," "I can handle whatever comes my way," "Today is a new opportunity to achieve my goals," and "I can manage stress and remain calm under pressure."

Step 3

Self-Reflection

10 mins

  • Reflect on how the positive affirmation makes you feel compared to the negative thought.
  • Consider how you can apply positive self-talk in different areas of your life.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

  • Summarize the importance of positive self-talk in daily life.
  • Commit to practicing positive affirmations regularly.
  • Complete the Positive Affirmations Worksheet for further practice.
