Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

"Good morning/afternoon everyone! Today, we are going to talk about two very important ideas that can help make our school an even better place for everyone. These ideas are empathy and being an upstander. Has anyone heard these words before? What do you think they might mean?"

"Great ideas! We'll explore them together. To start, let's do a quick warm-up activity. I'm going to show you some situations, and I want you to think about how you might feel if you were in those situations. You can write your thoughts on this handout or just think about them quietly."

"Take a minute to read through these. How would you feel if you were:

1. Playing tag and no one picks you for their team?
2. You accidentally spill your lunch tray in the cafeteria?
3. Someone makes a joke about your new shoes?
4. You see a classmate sitting alone at recess?"

"Does anyone want to share how they might feel in one of these situations? Remember, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to feelings. We all feel things differently, and that's okay. What's important is recognizing those feelings, both in ourselves and in others."

What is Empathy? (7 minutes)

"This brings us to our first big word: Empathy. Look at the definition on the slide. Empathy is understanding and sharing the feelings of another. It's like putting yourself in someone else's shoes. It's not just feeling sorry for someone, which is sympathy. Empathy is trying to understand what they're going through. Can anyone give me an example of what showing empathy might look like?"

"Those are wonderful examples! Empathy is so powerful because when we try to understand how someone else feels, it changes how we treat them."

"Why do you think empathy is so important in our school, or even in our families and communities?"

"Exactly! It helps us build stronger friendships, makes our school a kinder place, and helps us know when someone might need our help."

What is an Upstander? (8 minutes)

"Now, let's talk about our second important word: Upstander. An upstander is someone who sees something wrong happening and acts to make it right. An upstander does NOT just stand by and watch. They speak up or get help to support others! Think about the opposite: a 'bystander' is someone who just stands by and does nothing. Which do we want to be? An upstander!"

"It takes courage to be an upstander, but it makes a huge difference. What kind of 'wrong things' might we see happening in school where an upstander could step in?"

"Let's think about different places in our school where an upstander can make a difference. What could an upstander do if they see someone being left out at recess?"

"What about during lunch? If someone is sitting alone or struggling with something, what could an upstander do?"

"And in gym class, if someone is being excluded or picked on during a game?"

"Even in the classroom, if someone is being put down or needs help, what could an upstander do?"

"These are all fantastic ideas! Being an upstander isn't always about being super loud or confronting someone directly. It can also be about quiet acts of kindness, like inviting someone to play, or getting a trusted adult when you need help."

Activity: Upstander Scenarios (8 minutes)

"Now it's your turn to practice being an upstander! I'm going to divide you into small groups or pairs. I will give each group a scenario. Your task is to discuss two things:

1. How might the person feeling targeted feel?
2. What could an upstander do or say to help make it right?"

"Think about specific, kind, and brave actions. After a few minutes, we'll come back together and share some of your ideas."

(Allow time for group discussion. Circulate and provide guidance. After 5-6 minutes, bring the class back together.)

"Alright, let's hear from a few groups. Who would like to share one of their scenarios and what their upstanders came up with?"

"You all have such thoughtful ideas! Before we finish today, I want us to make an individual promise. I'm going to hand out this 'My Upstander Promise' sheet. On it, I want you to write down or draw how you will be an upstander in our school, making a promise to yourself to always be a kind and brave friend."

"Remember, empathy and being an upstander go hand-in-hand. When we understand how others feel, it motivates us to step up and help. Activity: Upstander Scenarios

Instructions: Work with your partner or small group. Read each scenario below. Discuss the two questions for each scenario, then be ready to share your ideas with the class.

Scenario 1: The Lonely Lunch Table

During lunch, you notice a new student sitting by themselves at a table, looking down at their food and not talking to anyone. Your friends are at a nearby table.

Scenario 2: Recess Exclusion

A group of classmates are playing a game of kickball at recess, but they keep telling one student, Alex, that they don't want them to play because Alex isn't very good at kickball. Alex looks really sad and is starting to walk away.

Scenario 3: The Teasing T-Shirt

In the hallway, you overhear some older students making fun of a 4th-grade student's favorite t-shirt. They are laughing and pointing, and the student looks embarrassed and is trying to hide behind their backpack.

As you're walking to class, you see a classmate carrying a huge stack of books, and suddenly they trip, sending all their books scattering across the floor. Other students are walking past without stopping to help.
